What have people paid to replace the carpet in 23 and or 26 foot models.

Also Reupholster drivers seats?

I have tried several places for the driver and passenger seats but most shops seem to be trying to sell me my old seats at new seat prices.

what has anyone paid to have this done?

John,
From what I read here your more of a payer instead of a doer! This is not bad, it just determines on how much info that you need. If you choose not to do some of the work yourself then your costs are going to be much higher. OK lets move on!

Today the common practice is to only carpet the cockpit area/front steps and the rear area by the beds, the rest is done with a “Pergo style flooring," the choice of brand is yours. The carpeting always looks nice in the living area for a while, but you just can’t keep the sand and dirt out. When I redid the 77 Eleganza II from carpet to Pergo flooring I took out almost 5# of sand and dirt from underneath the carpet and that was just from 2002 thru 2009, we had done a complete interior restoration in 2001. I had also put ceramic tile and that did work well.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/interior-restoration/p377.html
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/interior-restoration/p372.html

What is nice about the GMC is that if you don’t like the interior or get tired of it you can change it easily. The Pergo floor was easy, a day to do the setup and about 4 hours to install.

Now I have strayed a little bit here but I want to let you look at other options that are available to you, unless you're going for period correct.

The carpet cost is going to be all over the chart. You live in California and your cost will be higher. The total cost is determined by cost and amount of carpet. I buy mine and Lowes or Home Depot but you could also get your and any other big box store or a carpet only store, and remember that higher cost doesn’t make it any better, only more expensive. Pad cost and of course installation. Carpet comes in 12 foot width and depending if you're doing the whole floor in carpet you're going to need about 7 yards, slightly less for the 23 foot and you should measure and if other have remembered how much they bought for a complete carpet install please chime in, it has been 12 years since I have done a complete carpet. For the carpet in the cockpit and back I have $140 +/-. I have a carpet store just down the road from me who has done carpet work for me before and I end up at about $250 for the installation for cockpit and rear area and that also includes the pad and box of donuts done in my shop. For cost in your area I have no idea.

Unless you absolutely have to have the old seats and recovered, then most have opted for the Honda Odyssey Leather Seats and they can be found at a reasonably price. I paid $250 for the pair in tan new from a conversion van place and they are a great seat. There are other seats that have also been used and others may comment on what they used.

http://gmcmotorhome.info/living.html#honda

The old seats really suck for long term comfort going down the road and yes it will approach the cost of new unless you go south of the border to have the work done. Most have kept the bases and put new seats on the bases and junked the original seats, they are to give away.

I got a nice pair of seats from a Pontiac Montana van.
These are the middle seats with arm rests on both sides.
Easy to install, too.

You have found the reason that folks here say you will pay at least $25k for your GMC either up front, or over time.

If you can't DIY, close your eyes and write the check.

I installed 2 middle seats from a Mazda MPV (minivan). $60 at local pull-a-part, $50 for cleaning, and about $20 in miscellaneous steel angle to adapt the seats mounts to the GMC mounts. I now have reclining seats, with two arm ressts, and the CFO can actually move her seat to a more comfortable distance from the dash.
I will admit that I could not find the desired Honda/Chrysler seats. But, unless I do find good Honda/Chrysler seats, I'll stick with the Mazda seats.

One of the best upgrades I did was take the advice of Mr. Wright and Mr. Lenzi. Pulled the old smelly carpet and put down a pergo type flooring. Two days to rip out the old and remove (not pound in) a pound of staples. Shop vac everything really well and inspect the whole thing for any water damage, mold or rot. Pulled out tons of sand. Cost was around 120 bucks or so. no special tools needed. I did everything but the cockpit. I think I used 4 boxes of flooring and a roll of thicker under layment. I went with a Hickory color and it turned out very nice with the Royale's Walnut cabinets.

Super Easy to clean with the vacuum, and wipe down with a swiffer, Does not smell like wet/dirty carpet. Pretty easy on the feet, looks nice. Can be replaced for something different with minimal tear out work down the road.

Times change, however, back in The Day, the border cities in Mexico had many upholstery shops. Many did beautiful work for a substantial savings over this country. If that's still the circumstance, go South.

The wanted seats appear to be the middle seats with twin arm rest.

One comment I read on the GMC Facebook site said that non-carpet floors can be very dangerous for dogs who can go sliding slide into things in heavy braking.

Makes sense to me but we don't have a pet so we went with a cheap laminate. It literally was three hour job with a chop saw and tape measure. It took a lot longer to get the old nasty stuff out and vacuum up all the dust and sand than put down the new floor.

Kerry,

Thank you for this comment; I'll add to the list of why I don't read the Facebook page! ;-)

Tom,

Do you worry about your cats sliding when you brake hard?

The cats travel in their carriers. When out of their carriers, they tend to hide in various spots in the coach. We still have adequate carpeting for them to hang on to. Real problem is, they do not react to, "Oh, S**t!"

Kerry,
I know several GMC owners that travel with their pets and they really like the fact that the non-carpet floors are so much easier to clean pet oops up and odor control. When it get into the carpet you have pet forever! Just a wet mop and dry with towel.

My dog always lays on the couch behind the driver seat or on the carpet in the cockpit. Carpeting the cockpit is an easy evening job, flat spot with no tricky angles. Someday I'll try to redo the front seats on my own. Then I'll pay double to have a pro fix them...
