Good Evening Everyone,
I need to source a new A/C compressor for a 77 GMC(455). The coach is in another city at the moment and I am arriving later this week to pick it up. I have been told the A/C compressor needs to be replaced. I want to order a new one and have it replaced this week before I have to take the coach on an adventure this Sunday. I have have someone taking care of scheduling the work with a reputable shop but I want to make sure the correct compressor is available for them. They will not have an opportunity to see the coach before the day they are scheduled to do the work. I have searched the forum and there seems to be some trial and error with finding the correct fitment.
If I had more time I would order one from Applied GMC but I am afraid it would not arrive soon enough.
Here is one I found for a Toronado at NAPA:

Bryan,
The one that you have listed will not fit the coach. You're looking for an A6 Compressor.
NAPA:
O’Reilly Auto Parts:
If your system was an original R12 system and you are going to use R134 instead of Duracool you will have to flush the entire system to remove the mineral oil before you change the oil to ester oil. BAD things happen when you mix these 2 oils. Also check the oil in the compressor that you use, some come charged with mineral oil which you will have to drain and refill or ester oil which you can use with R134 or Duracool. At the very least you will also need to change the Filter Dryer if you change to R134 or Duracool and keep the ester oil.

Now a short word about Duracool. Provides lower head pressure and better cooling and a large number of GMCers are using it. Repair places will not install it as most do not have access to it or know about it.

Thank you sir. I have read a few threads where folks have had to try 2 or three times to get the correct compressor from NAPA/OReilly/Etc. before they found the correct fitment. I see you included "NAPA:" and "O'Reilly:" in your response with no part numbers.
Do you know what the correct part number for the correct compressor would be at either or both of those stores?

While you are in the mode of updating your dash AC a bit.... Put a good
ball shut off valve on each of the 2 heater hoses going into the heater box
up front. First if that 30+ year old heater core starts to leak it will be
easy to take it out of the circuit but also this vacuum operated vent
system was never designed to work this long... in the absence of vacuum to
the heater control valve it passes heat to the box which will surly
contaminate your cooling attempt because the foam gasket baffle the heater
control cable controls will allow heat into the AC evaporator not letting
it get as cold as it could be.
If you can get heat out of that sick vent system in the winter and cold air
in the summer I call that good. Trying to make it work totally as new
would take wayyyy to much work. All the rest of the stuff of the system
can be renewed as original... the vent system may never work correctly
again. valves off in the summer really helps the system

IMHO: A used A6 from the junkyard is better than a so-called
"rebuilt" from any of the discount autopart stores.
The rebuilt units from south of the boarder are notorious for failing.

Thanks everyone. I am not sure if I am going to try and "rush" the A/C repair in the limited time I have at the moment. I may just use the generator/roof air until I get the coach home and I can spend a little more time to do it right. I'll make the final decision when I can confirm parts availability and talk to the tech.

And how's the Onan? A lot of folks who plan to run with the roof air find
that their Onan won't cooperate.

Can you elaborate? Does that mean that a lot of the Onans won't keep running as you travel down the road? Overheating? What issues or symptoms should I be worried about?

Man, I am here to defend the much too oft maligned ONAN GENERATOR.These old
trolls are hidden and neglected somewhere in the bowels of the GMC. The old
trusty machine sits all alone in the dark, no maintenance to speak of,
literally for years. At the first hint of a burp or a stumble, caused by
the owner totally ignoring it for years at a time, they get yanked out of
their comfy enclosure and dumped out in the weather. Come on people, show
them a little love. They are as reliable as any machine can be made. They
are designed to go 2500 hours between overhauls. Mine has been back there
purring along for 37 years and has less than 500 hours on it. Do the math.
Is your pot metal Honda going to be around that long? It will be turned
back into aluminum and zinc residue by road salt long before that. Hey
guys, change it's oil once in a while, filter too. Put a fresh air cleaner
on it, and clean the fuel screen. Blow the rat and mouse droppings and mud
dauber nests out once in a while. You won't regret it.

Yes, a lot of Onan's are not reliable on the road. A lot are, and I can't
quote statistics, but if you're putting "all your eggs in that basket",
you'll likely be one of the unlucky ones.
I don't have the magic answer to why they're unreliable, but it has been my
observation that those who have overheating problems while parked but hope
for better results while driving are generally disappointed.
My best advice, based on a few years of experience: For this first trip,
keep your schedule flexible enough to allow you to travel only during the
cool hours -- NOT the middle of the day.
Let me explain that: Our GMC was bought, and used, for a trip to Alaska,
made in 2000. I had two years of GMC preparation and experience behind me
when we left S. GA with a freshly refurbished dash HVAC, and a new roof
A/C. The Onan was running pretty good, and I upgraded it with an
electronic ignition while waiting for the ferry to Alaska. We didn't need
A/C until we got back from Alaska but in Spokane, we learned that the dash
HVAC had lost R-12, so I had it topped off. A transmission leak in Wyoming
caused a several day delay. By the end of that, the R-12 was gone again.
Crossing the mid-west in August, the Onan decided it didn't like the heat,
so we lost the roof air. We wound up on a schedule of 0400 to 1200 travel
across Kansas and the rest of the US, wearing swimsuits and with the "wind
wings" deployed.
You won't have the 2 years pre-prep I had.
