After doing a complete rear brake job with new shoes and hardware, plus fluid flush, and an 80mm caliper upgrade for the front with PFC carbon metallic pads, I finally got to go out this afternoon and bed in the brake pads. Did several stops, with light pressure, medium pressure, and hard pressure, from 50 to 30 (light) and 65-35 on medium and heavy. Followed with a cool down period, basically getting back to the house with as little brake usage as possible.

After pulling in the driveway, I used my IR thermometer to check the drum temps. Wondering if I have cause for concern...

Passenger Front: 140
Passenger Rear: 160
Driver Front: 250
Driver Rear: 170

The DF seems like a real outlier. Or am I making more of this than I should?

I cleaned and replaced the four rear bearings when everything was apart.

Thoughts?

Thought: Something ain't right in the driver front. 80MM calipers = new hoses, so likely not a collapsed hose. Either a pad dragging, or a problem with the bearings in that hub. run it dopwn the highway and coast to a stop. Shoot both discs and both knuckles and see what you get. Answer you need is, is the disc getting it hotter, or are the front bearings getting it hotter.

Thanks Johnny I wasn't clear on the temps I listed. They were for just the drums. So, Driver front would be the middle wheel. My mistake.

I also remembered that it was this wheel that measured high received a new wheel cylinder. Would that do anything?

Yeh, it may be dragging. Are ya >sure< the new wheel cylinder was the same diameter as the old one? here are two sizes, if you have differences side to side, you'll have different braking side to side, and consequently different temops side to side. However, since it's the four rears, easy check. find a clear road, boogie down it at highway speeds for a few minutes. Coast to a stop w/out touching the brakes. Remeasure. if it's hotter than the others, it's dragging. If it's the same, time to check the new cylinder diameter. If it's dragging, check emergency brake cables and adjustment.

I think Driver Front is Left Middle, so it's a drum problem, not the new 80
mm caliper. Very likely not properly adjusted, or the parking brake cable
is sticking. So darned many mickey-mouse parts in any drum system that it
may require pulling the drum to be sure they're all in place correctly.

Ok, will try Johnnys tip. The PO had put on Cinnabar brake hoses and the wheel cylinder in 2004.

I will need to check thru my notes, but know I did some monkeying around with the emergency brake to insure proper tension.

Rats, was hoping I wouldn't have to get back into the brakes, because as Ken said, about a zillion different pieces in there.

Matt,

You did target the drum though a wheel opening - right??
I usually measure the disk/drum and hub temperatures in all 12 places.
In the rear, there is usually a variation front to rear, but never that big.
Were I you, I would try to chase that one down. 110° is more than I would expect.

The wheel cylinder I installed was 15/16", which I believe is same the PO had replaced on other side based off the Cinnabar invoice. I will double check when I get back to the coach.

Matt - the temp readings I took were on the top of the hub, past the fins. Consistent location for all drums. I did get Zoe variation around the drum itself, so picked the one spot for stable testing.

All those temps are pretty low so it may indicate a tight adjustment that should equalize after you get some miles on the set up. If you stay under 500 on any of the drums, you should be fine.

Add this to the FWIW file; I just checked all four drums with an iR thermometer on Saturday. It was an 80F day and I checked after 75 miles of 60 mph freeway driving. I have 16.5 steel wheels and shot the drum surface through the wheel holes. All four were 125F +- 5.
