When Ken Hen said he had a buy on belts I remarked that my alternator belt is longer than normal because the pulley is larger... I have had to change it though several alternators.

Now that the Jack Stand Queen is actually driving I was changing out my 415th fan clutch. I decided to check the numbers on my belts. It came as a rude shock that none of my belts seem to be what the book calls for. Amazement would not do and I had to resort to astonishment.

The interchange book says:

AC:
Goodyear 15634 Mine is a Goodyear 15606 It also says 11AV1525
Alternator:
Goodyear 15574 Mine is a Goodyear 15585 It also says 11AV1475
Power Steering:
Goodyear 15466 Mine is a Goodyear 15450 and also says 11AV1130
My Goodyear # is a Dayco # - 15450 but a Goodyear belt

I used to think I knew some things and that the inner number was the length. So I thought the AC was a 60 and it looks like the book says 63... WHich seems pretty long. I would have to mount the AC pump outside the fender.

Alternator would be 1" shorter which might let me use a regular pulley.

Power steering seems an inch short and I am not sure I care.

My belts look good and run high in the pulleys but we are going to do some long distances in the future so I want spares.

Guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks for the serpentine links. I will be leaving in a few weeks and don't have the money or inclination to convert.

I really just want to know what belts to get. Should I just get more of what I have or should I got to original? The alternator has a bigger pulley and so I really would like to get a belt for a standard pulley so I don't have to swap pulleys each time I change alternator.

Does anyone know if the number gives length as I supposed in my post?

I'd bet that if you go to a standard alternator pulley wheel, you will get higher output from your alternator!

My ac varies between 15605 and 15610, depending on the make of belt. 15575 for the alt and 15540 for the ps from Ken's outlet. They recognize me when I call now ..."you again?..."

"...Jack stand queen..." LOL. I'm stealing that...

The "15" part of the number refers to the width of the belt...15/32 of an inch. I just call them 15 gauge, but the parts guys don't have that same type of thinking anymore and usually have to find a dusty book somewhere to look up belts for most of my vehicles. The other 3 numbers refer to the length in inches and tenths of an inch. 604 would be 60 and 4/10ths of an inch. 545 would be 54 and 5/10ths, etc. The numbers do not always agree between different belt manufacturers in terms of fitment on the particular vehicle. Width and stretch can make big differences in part numbers that describe length.

If the belts presently installed put the adjustment in the middle of its range and they ride at the right depth in the pulleys, then I would get the same part number of the same brand as a replacement for each. The same part number from a different manufacturer may not ride at the same height in the pulley or stretch more or less and so the adjustment would change. A good parts store will have a belt gauge and length measuring tool so they can duplicate the belts you already have regardless of manufacturer, but remember the stretch may be different and can possibly run the adjustment out of its range.

I would get the same size belt for your alternator that you have now if you do not intend to change the pulley before hitting the trail. A smaller alternator pulley will give you more output versus engine rpm like Mac said, which is a good idea for the GMC application, but you will have to trial and error fit a belt with that pulley mounted to determine the correct size from manufacturer X,Y, and Z. If you choose to accept that mission, get 2 belts once you determine the size that fits correctly.

As I used to say when I worked the parts counter (AND when I worked the service counter): "The car is always right." If you have belts that fit, and you know their numbers, that's what to carry, unless you plan on changing pulleys or something.
For myself, when I get new belts every few years or so, I carry the old ones as spares. JWID.

Happy trails.
