Ken I have a much outdated version but love it as you could import all the CD data to your drive and then leave the CD at home. Do you know if this version still has that feature? Thanks.

I just ordered one. Gotta be careful in selecting the product. You enter the "10145" sale code during sign up.

The version I installed a couple of years ago (that Bdub loaned me) just installed completely. Once it was installed, there was no need to have the CD in the drive. I made a blacklist file to import into it and Microsoft Streets and Trips. It was on Bdub's blacklist page, but was subsequently taken down for the privacy of the people on the list. That import file contained street addresses, the current blacklist doesn't have those details. Here's a screenshot of what that detailed blacklist looked like on MS&T (DeLorme was equally functional):

Thanks for the tip, Ken.

We just ordered one. We've been using Street Atlas USA with GPS for more than 10 years, maybe more than 15.

Susan navigates from the co-pilot's seat (actually the navigator's seat) with her laptop and gives me progressive instructions. The only problem is that I don't have as much of a sense of where we've been as when I did my own navigation using a map. But I get to look around a lot more.

The DeLorme system has been more than excellent with only a very few glitches over the years.

A very early version, when asked for the shortest route from Utopia, TX to Austin, TX, routed us over dirt roads and through ranches. We followed that route just for fun and to see if it was passable; it was.

Once a street in the Los Angeles hills showed to be continuous, but in fact was a dead end with a very deep canyon with no structures at all and a fairly long way around.

Otherwise, the DeLorme GPS product been great. We recommend the DeLorme GPS to all.

Don,

If you were provided a suspect route with Delorme could one obtain a rough
location from the directions in the questionable area and then look it up
on google earth for a real birds eye view with which to make a better
decision?

Sully,

Yes, Google Earth would give some good clues. I recall that crazy trip through the Texas ranch lands was in the fall of 2005. We were even routed across the occasional creek. There was no Google Earth available then or even satellite view (I think).

It was immediately apparent the route offered was crazy; shortest because it was over the most direct line of anything that qualified as a "road" from Utopia to Austin.

We took it anyway just for the fun of it and to see what DeLorme might do when asked for shortest route in unfamiliar territory.

We learned to select through points to force the DeLorme routing where we wanted. Later editions offered no such crazy routing.

We often just wander in some general direction, following, the sun or moon, or some interesting road. DeLorme keeps track of our position and we can see what lies ahead and maybe modify our wanderings.

We are glad to get a new edition. Our last one is several years old.

Sully,

It is even easier to do than it is to talk about.
First, you have to set SA(Street Atlas) and GE(Google Earth) to the same coordinate format. I us DDD MM.mmm even though I use DDD MM SS for decades.
SA provides the Lat/Long of the cursor continuously. Just fire GE and Alt/Tab between the two and move until you get a match. It is not always easy to see some of the hinterland roads, but if you can't see it from overhead, you have to think about taking the GMC there. It also great for finding where to overnight and such.

I ordered the Delorme bundle with GPS receiver last night and am stoked to
hook it to my ms surface and test fly it on a trip to a soccer tournament
next weekend in Portland. Later in August we are trekking to Panacca Nevada
for the second to last round of the NHHA series and hope to have the
nav system kind of worked out before.

You might want to look at the Rand McNally GPS also. I bought one when I got my coach and love it. Large screen and has a backup camera option.

Alan,

It is hardly an either/or situation.
The dashboard GPS are never much value for planning and lack so many of the easily available features that they cannot be compared. While Street Atlas on a laptop or tablet can be an underway navigator, even a small tablet is too large to put in front of a driver. The best that we have found is to load the day's route (or the moments - some cases) to the driver's GPS. (Either directly or by cable.) Then examine and correct the route as needed.
