Wanted. Refridgerator Options PLEASE.

Oh Crap! My refrigerator For my TZE just went onto a 3 day death throw. Its a Norcold 778. (3 way fridge) it has plenty of heat in both 120 and gas and no cooling. Therefore it must be in need of a cooling unit.

It seems that my options are:
1 - Buy Replacement fridge at the RV Dealer
2 - Have Dealer Replace Cooling Unit
3 - Do a Coolng Unit replacement myself.
4 - Buy a used Fridge

Does Anyone in Alberta, Washington, Oregon, Western California (Bay Area, LA area, San Diego area) have an afordable option for me.
(Cooling Unit, Used Fridge, new Fridge)

Im headed that direction with a utility trailer and can pick up. The Canadian Dollar stinks right now so that will be a concideration

Im willing to change out the cooling unit if I can find one that Does not need to be shipped to Canada or if the core charge is cheap enough. (I can pick it up during my trip) hopefully it would be a good quality (i don't know what products are concidered good) (I also do not know where to buy one along my route)

Ill also be stopping into some of the mass marketers along the way (Any suggestions for good ones that I should check out would also be appreciated)

By the way. I know miguel and jim K (I'll be stopping in to see them)

Thanks

The most economical is to replace the cooling unit yourself. It is not a difficult job and requires no special tools. It probably takes longer to remove and reinstall the frig than it does to change the cooling unit. Your challenge will be to find the best deal on a cooling unit. You can buy a new cooling unit but it approaches the cost of a new frig. There are a lot of places selling rebuilt units but there are differences in how good of a job they do. They have to be flushed well to remove all old material and some rebuilders are better than others. There is a place in Indiana that has been good. Someone here will chime in with his name.

John, there may be another option available to repair your fridge. The method is called "burping " which involves removing the fridge and turning it over once a day for five days. To clarify day one the fridge is upside down, day two the fridge is upright, day three the fridge is upside down, day four the fridge is upright, day five the fridge is upside down.

This past Monday we started this "burping" method on the fridge in our Glenbrook. We should know on the weekend if this was successful.

We will keep you updated.

I tried the burping method and was unsuccessful in resurrecting my fridge.
In fact it turned into a health hazard.

After 5 days of rotations, I plugged it in to 12V and 120V and was going to let it sit overnight in the garage to test.
I could hear the ammonia bubbling and could feel the back side getting hot.
I worked on some other stuff and when I was getting ready for bed, I thought I smelled ammonia.
Went into the garage and yes, I definitely smelled ammonia.
Since I was about to go to sleep, the garage was shut and locked.
I opened the fridge to see if it was cool at all and got surprised by a hot gas cloud of ammonia.
It burned my eyes and lungs to the point that I struggled to find the garage door and could not breath.
Once I did get the door open and was outside, it took a while to catch my breath.
I did thoroughly flush my eyes and use eye drops.
Two days later, my throat still hurts, but not that bad.

My wife does not want me to even attempt to replace the cooling coils at this point.

Lesson is: Be very careful where the fridge is when you are testing it after it has stopped cooling.

John, stop at RV parts outlet in Tigard, Or. Just off I -5 south of
portland. They will have an exact sized replacement Dometic rv refrigerator
to replace that NO_COLD. WARNING: if you install a norcold In a GMC, they
will void your warranty. There is no way to install one correctly
according to norcold in the space available in a GMC. TRUST ME. BEEN THERE,
DONE THAT, GOT THE SCARS TO PROVE IT.

I used to work for Dometic Tech Service in the mid-80's. At that time they were telling service personell in their seminars that "burping" was a waste of time and effort - it used to work years ago on some early cooling unit designs, and the story about doing this just kept being repeated by people through the years. If a cooling unit is "vapor locked" the same thing can be accomplished by making sure the unit is properly leveled, then shutting it off for 24 hours. All the liquids will find their correct levels by then.

I wrote a service bulletin on the procedure to check out a fridge. Basically it said to remove the fridge from the cabinet (eliminates any venting problems), then install a known good 120 volt element with the proper wattage rating, connect 120 volts directly to the element leads (bypasses any problems in the thermostat and other electrical circuits), then check the operation after 8 hours or so. There were some guidelines on what temperatures to expect inside, and what the coils on the back should feel like. (I wrote the bulletin, but that was 30 years ago - and I didn't memorize it) Sad

John,
Call Leon at http://fixyourfridge.com/ and ask him about shipping you a replacement cooling unit. We were just over at his place last Friday when he put in a BRAND NEW Dometic in Ray and Barb' Gall's coach. Cost was a little over $700. He has rebuilt and new cooling units. He replaced the CU on ours about 5 years ago, and it still works beautifully.
