From what I think I knew. Since the 403 is a small block. Thus has parts in common with the Olds 350. Shouldn't the 403 be shorter then the 455 big block from the center line of the crank to the top of the block were the intake sits. On my 78- 403 the air cleaner is up against the engine cover. And I've seen this on other 78- 403's. So I must be wrong. I found a 350 Olds Edelbrook alum intake manifold that I want to install when I finally put my EFI on. Should that intake fit?Bob Dunahugh

There are different aircleaners. That is different in the way they fold around the carb making total height different

Which intake are you looking to install? Performer, performer rpm?

I put a performer on my 77 10 years ago and it seems to fit fine. There isn't any extra room to the engine hatch though.

I also plugged of the exhaust crossover and put in an electric choke when I switched intakes. The choke was a little work to get dialed in but this is also the only carb I've really worked on.

The rear AC support didn't want to fit back in after I changed intakes but I don't recall what the issue was.

The 455 intake manifold is sort of concave. I am going to guess the 403 intake manifold is sort of convex. That'll raise the carb, and therefore the breather.

The 455 in the GMC used a low profile intake while the 403 used a regular RWD passenger intake. So, even though the 403 is lower, the regular intake uses up that extra room.
