They were premium priced motorhomes, even more expensive than our GMCs.

All the diesel pushers that I know about use either a direct engine driven fan forcing air up off the road and through the rear mounted turbo intercooler, then through the radiator and finally through the AC condenser or use a side mounted, hydraulic motor driven fan forcing air up off the road and through the side mounted radiator. The turbo intercooler and AC condenser sometimes are in the same air stream and sometimes in a separate air stream. Pulling air up off the road works fine for inline six diesels as the exhaust is all on one side and the cooling pick up air is from the radiator side of the engine. Not so easy to do with a V8 or V6 configuration like the older Detroit Diesels or the gas Chrysler 440 where there are exhaust manifolds on both sides to add heat to the incoming air stream. None the less they apparently did work to some extent but the FMC coach had a reputation for cooling issues. The older Detroit diesels did not seem to have over heating issues as they were used in many of the large early diesel pushers like the Newells, Prevosts, Blue Bird and Country Coach Concept. The big issue with many older side radiator diesel pushers today is the hydraulic motor driving the side mounted fan breaks or wears out and are no longer available. The big issue with the direct fan drive diesel pushers is that the openings in the intercooler are larger than the openings in the radiator so junk picked up off the road can pass through the intercooler and stick to the inside of the radiator where you can’t get to it. Think plastic shopping bags…….

One of the motorhomes Charles Kuralt had was an FMC for his ?On the Road? series. I believe they were made here in San Jose and were premium coaches for their time.

I suspect they?ve found an effective way to cool the things as so many diesel pushers use rear or side radiators. And - yes it makes our GMC cooling system seem like childs play!
