If one is interested in what a new technology GMC might well look like now 40 years later, one needs look no further than the cover of the August 2015 FMCA magazine. Thor has introduced a 26’, 12,500 pound class A on a 194 inch wheel base Ford chassis with a V10 Triton FI engine and Ford 5 speed transmission. 4:10 axle ratio, 225/75R16 tires, 30 amp shore connection, 4kw Onan gas generator slurping fuel from the 55 gallon gas tank, 39 gal fresh water tank, 30 gal black, 40 gal gray, a smallish propane tank (41#), 6 gal propane and electric hot water heater, 30,000 btu furnace and 6 cu ft refer. The major difference from our GMCs is that it is 11’ 3” tall as it has to sit on top of the drive shaft and rear differential. Price is $100,000. Sure makes a $60k to $80k restoration of a GMC look good, doesn’t it? Oh, if we only had a four speed transmission!

I betcha the three speed we got will do as well as a V10 Triton hauling that thing around. Time will tell.

It is a nice effort, I suppose. One of the big things I like about the GMC is the huge windows. I don't understand why even the huge coaches have tiny windows. I am imagining the leaf spring rear is not like our air ride. But you are so right about the transmission. I would take a 5 speed manual with overdrive!
But, I won't be trading in our GMC for a Thor.

That Ford V10 is a gas sucker. I'll bet my 455 gets better MPG.

The Triton V10 in a 350 Econoline was our standard van for years. It's rugged as all hell, the kids couldn't tear them up or overload them. We fitted a couple with the 5KW inverter alternator sets that were originally fitted to Navy riverine vessels - and made the drivers open the hood and stick a short block beside the latch. Hold the hood open enough to open the crack one each side, they run cool and can be idled for hours with the A/C and generator running without problems. Best I ever saw out of one on the freeway was ~~14 mpg. Not a concern to us, they rarely went over 10K miles a year, but saw several hundred parked hours.

I've had several people tell me that after looking at that coach at BS,
they stopped thinking maybe they'd try one.

My buddy in Palm Springs has some big box MH with a Chevy 454. He says he blows past the Ford V10 big box MHs on the long uphill grades. He's a retired GM mechanic and service manager and not a Ford fan so may be slightly prejudice.
