Well, the original one weeks stay in the hospital for my spinal fusion ended up being almost 2 weeks in the hospital followed by almost 5 weeks in rehab.

I am home but I still have loads of pain and am now taking a couple of days of physical therapy per week and lots and lots of strong medications.

I am wearing a very large back brace and cannot be out of bed without it.

My complications seem to be caused by a hairline fracture around a screw head. Apparently this is causing most of the pain and I am told it could take as much a 4 months to heal. The four fused lumbar vertebrae are supposed to take until the end of the year to fully heal.

I have appointments at my medical doctor on Friday and at my surgeon next Monday so I may learn more about my condition then.
I have been told not to lift anything heavier than 5 pounds for the next several weeks and then not over 10 pounds through perhaps the end of the year. This sure restricts doing any work on my GMC.
Since Rapid City is only 400 miles from my home, Michelle and I hope to drive our car there and stay in a motel. We already have the motel reservation. So, unless anything very negative happens we hope to see many of you at the GMCMI convention in September for the Mt. Rushmore activities.

Meanwhile I want to thank all my friends for their concern, cards , emails and prayers. I’ll be posting more on the GMCnet and I hope the narcotics that I am still taking doesn’t give me the confusion that I had encountered while at the hospital. I often wasn’t thinking clearly. Hopefully that didn’t reflect too much in the few email that I had sent.

Great to be home, no! Hope the meds and healing give you increasing relief.
May I suggest asking your doctors about driving to the convention? You might want to rent/borrow/appropriate one of the minivans with disappearing seats so you could travel lying down.

Anyhow GREAT NEWS!

Hurray! Prayers answered. It has been a long, long road. Sorry about the pain but home is so much better than rehab.

Later you can look back on this year as "the year" but it will be behind you.

Do as the Dr.s say. Not easy, but you will have to behave.

So happy to hear the good news of your continued recovery and release from hospital jail. Your being in Rapid City will be another incentive for me to travel there for the convention.

Some of your posts during your hospital stay were on the amusing side. I think we all knew that it was your "feel good with less pain medication" and not your normal way of communicating. I can not imagine what I would be saying under similar circumstances.

Anyways welcome back!

Glad to hear you are home and doing so much better, Emery. Although I had a small taste of what you are going through with my recent wrist surgery, I can't imagine what you are going through. Keep looking forward and you'll be back to 100% soon enough. That's what I keep telling myself too. Wink

Emery that's great news!

Your recovery should improve now that you're home. Please do heed all of your Doctor's instructions - even if you just "know" that you feel well enough to do something. My back surgery wasn't as extensive as yours, but I did learn a valuable lesson, which I hope you will also learn from.

Our prayers for your speedy recovery continue...

Emery,

Glad to see you are home. Just take it a day at a time.
Best advise I got from my doctor last year was: "If it hurts..
don't do it". (or in my case "don't do it again".)

Emery,

Glad to hear you "broke out!"

I'm looking on the positive side of your message below and hoping that you'll be good as gold in four months!

I promise if you say something that confuses me I'll let you know. You'll have to take into consideration that I am easily confused
at times! ;-)
