I've been on the GMCNET for going on 17 years since six months or so after I bought my GMC back in 1998. It used to be the only place to get questions about GMC motorhomes answered. However, it appears that things have changed.
These days I don't post much, but I regularly scan the first page or so of the forum to see if anything is happening. During the last 6 months or so it seems that the content has diminished greatly. Also, it seems that many former regular contributors have gone dark.
Now I know why, they went to Facebook. Recently I created an account (not my real name) just to see what is going over there. Looks like there are at least 3 or 4 Facebook pages with GMC Motorhome content with many familiar names from the past posting.
I also read a lot of wrong information being offered up as the way to do things.
What a loss if the GMCNET just becomes a mail list for a few old guys. Guys I might add that know a thing or two about GMC Motorhomes.
Am I the only one on the planet that has no intention of doing Facebook? I won't get into all the reasons why I am not going to participate.

I only have a FB account for GMC info. I, too, noticed the slowdown in gmcnet (forum version). Like it or not, that's the trend.

I don't use ANY email notifications on FB, browser access only. I've completely gutted my FB profile and do not get any sort of spam.
That said, the format over there sucks.

This topic was beat into submission a few weeks ago. I am in agreement with you about not using Facebook but a lot of people do like it. We seemed to come to the consensus that the GMCnet was better for technical information and Facebook was good for social interaction. They both have their place though and we all need to get along. The past discussions caused some hard feelings. Keep contributing to the GMCnet and I'm sure it will survive. At least as long as the coaches themselves survive.
I have watched for your coach in the neighborhood but have not seen it. One day I will be on Wilderness Park Drive and you will be there. I will stop in.

It cuts both ways. This is a better forum for finding information and retrieving past inquiries, but if you talk to Jeff at Alex Sirum he has seen a massive increase in interest in these coaches in the last year or so. Mostly younger than his usual clientele. Whenever he asks where they heard about the coach, invariably it comes back to the Facebook groups. Both groups serve a role and should coexist.

I'm a new guys so my input probably doesn't count for much but I'll toss my 2 cents in here anyway.
I'd bet the reason for the move to facebook is because mailing lists are 10 years outdated.
I'm a member of quite a few forums and this is the only one that still holds on to the mailing list. It really mucks up the forum and makes it unpleasant to read, because there are so many duplicates everywhere and no one seems to read the same information. Missing posts from people who just respond to the emails, off forum emails that don't help anyone down the line, etc.
This forum needs to get rid of the mailing list and use just a forum IMHO.

Richard,
You and I have been here for about the same period -- starting not long
after Patrick opened the site. As far as I'm concerned, this is THE place
for GMC information, giving and getting. I "have" a Facebook account -- I
once looked at the granddaughters' postings and that's the extent of my FB
activity. I still read every GMCNet email posting and sometimes comment.
That's how I expect it to remain as long as I'm still kicking. Hope you'll
be here when I'm gone.

In my opinion, Facebook is just a social networking site. There are those who try to turn it into a technical forum but it doesn't work well for that. It seems the posts are not archived in any way and there is no way to search a subject. Instant gratification is all you get. That can work, but not as well as the forum.
I will contribute to Facebook sometimes, in the form of tech info, but usually only to correct some of the erroneous information that frequently pops up there. If I need to tap into the broader knowledge base, I do it here.
Just two different formats, both useful in their own ways.

There are really two different purposes at work here. One us purely
technical, and when we stray away from the subject, or get political, or
disrespectful, Billy grabs us by the neck and squares us away. The other
purpose is Social in nature with a loose structure, almost anything goes,
and typically is a newsy, disinformational, hodge podge of topics. I prefer
the first, mostly because I am busy everyday with GMC coach repairs. Don't
have much time to socialize during the day. So, I stay off Facebook but
Judy will look at it and keep me up to speed.

Just my opinion from someone who probably spends way too much time on facebook and this forum. two main pages usually open in the background on my laptop...
I have seen GMCnet traffic drop for a few reasons. I think there was a huge curb when there started having issues with email addresses. both with the yahoo and aol addresses. I am not sure what the huge drawback for someone to switch email accounts, but I think that cut out alot of posting for whatever reason.
I think both areas are important, and I hope that everybody here still keeps it going and busy. I also hope facebook keeps going as well, but sometimes big is not always better.
I am happy that I have received good help, and I have been able to assist others as well, both on GMCnet, Private messaging on GMCnet, Facebook, and private messaging from facebook. it is a fact that 80%+ people will read posts, and not reply or start a message. I have received a number of messages from people who have never posted. Both on facebook and GMCnet.
this thread will continue to pop up, and I believe the more help, the better. Especially since there seems to be so many more coaches out there rotting away that need to be brought back to life from someone realizing their true value.

Facebook has its place in certain situations, mostly for sharing personal media. I work in the IT field for a living and we use forums all of the time for technical discussion, so to me there's no way it can ever replace a forum like this.

I'm on FB and a member of the GMC sites. Different crowd with different goals for the most point. I will occasionally answer a technical question but more often have linked them here or to the photo site. There is some bad info passed out occasionally but someone usually corrects it. There is OBVIOUSLY a younger crowd developing interest in GMCs and that's a good thing. The trick will be to get them involved in the community and participating in rallies, GMCMI, etc. Many of them appear to just not be interested in being 'joiners'.

Regardless of whether we like the format or not, attrition and demographics are on FB's side. I've seen it kill 2 other technically oriented forums, and see no reason gmcnet will be spared. Like Richard said, the diminishing content here has already been noticeable.
Whatever your preference, if you enjoy watching GMCs for sale, Bdub'd spin-off FB group is really worthwhile.

I've been on Patrick's GMCnet for as long as anyone I know of. It's had
it's ups and downs and mostly been passed by with newer forum software
except for Eugene's FudPhorum (script) mirror.
You're right, Richard. It seems like every time the email list goes down
for any length of time, the place becomes a ghost town. Seems like
everybody hasn't been coming back when it becomes available again. This
tells me that most of our contributors subscribe to the old original email
list.
And, a lot of us have discovered something new. Social Media. I like
Facebook. I meet new GMC friends there every single day. Some are looking
for a GMC because they saw one somewhere and some are long time owners who
have never heard of the GMCnet. Some are looking to find an audience to
promote their GMC For Sale and some are looking for an answer to a question
they have. It's just so darn EASY and we're all so darn ACCOMMODATING.
Just as on GMCnet we try to bend over backwards to help one another and
especially the nubies.
The public group, 'Classic GMC Motorhomes' in Facebook is 1450 members
strong after having only been around for a year and a half. Folks are
constantly referred to the GMCnet for more information.
Folks, Facebook is where the future of the GMCnet is coming from.

I'd agree that Facebook is now more popular, but still prefer the GMCnet because of the search function. It also seems that the knowledge base on the Forum is much larger than that found on Facebook.

Well, I am sitting here while Mary drives, and just thought that I would throw my thoughts on this fire.
I used to have to train a lot of GenXers and Millennials for lab work, and was quickly battered by these people's world. They grew up with M-TV and McDonalds so, patience and research is just not in their vocabulary. They can learn, but if a subject runs on more then a 30 second spot, many will burn down their "Attention Moment" and you just play bloody hell trying to get them "back in the boat" (I don't know another way to say that). In all honesty, if they don't want to be here, we don't want them here. It is just that simple.
The only reason that I got on Facebook was that I was trying to get some of the younger demographics to work to rebuild Eastern States. When I first got there, I tried answering questions thought the crowd of mis-informed. I often tried to direct them to the forum. I was roundly chastised for trying to redirect some individuals to where they could get the right answers the first time. I gave up. There is a coach owner over there that keeps re-asking the same questions. He can keep doing that and I will now forever ignore him. One of his threads went on for a week and I guess he just never got an answer that was short enough for him to digest.
I do not like mailing lists, they went out with the 1200 baud modem in my book. I tend to think of broad band access as a thing like indoor plumbing.
Facebook is now a dead issue to me. It is so hard to get meaningful information, it is pretty much useless. Unfortunately, there is no other place that I can tell about watching Mi-26s in UN colors doing maneuvers while I waited for AAA morons to listen to what they were told numerous times. Of course, I can tell people about this and not many even begin to realize the implications. If it doesn't matter to them right now, it never will.
As of now, I may or may not read any of the GMC stuff, but I pretty much don't.

I see the subject is getting a through thrashing again.
It’s not going away. People moved from MySpace to Facebook, and are now on to Snapchat and Twitter, not to mention that my GMC Pics on Pinterest have been shared as many times are there are (were) GMC Motorhomes.
