For those who need a VSS for their EFI or aftermarket cruise control, this
is the best price you're likely to find:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speedometer-sender-GM-type-transimssion-16-pulse-rev-generator-Hall-effect-/260778921588
?

I have not tried one of them so know nothing about their quality nor
reliability -- I just stumbled across it.

Ken,

Wouldn’t this require an electronic speedometer? I don’t see any passthrough for a speedometer cable to the dash.

Larry,

Of course, you're correct. I've had my new dash, with everything
electronic, for long enough to stop being careful about such trivialities.

Thanks Ken. The one they sent me has Dakota Digital engraved on one of the flats. The cable is over 10' long.

Nice looking unit. I just bought one. Thanks, Ken.

I am going a way from my cable unit (If I can ever get delivery) so I just got a VSS without the pass through, as well. Paid more than $24!

Interesting Hall effect unit. I have a Dakota Digital "translator" box so I went with a non-Hall effect this time. I have fried two Hall Effect units. One failed and one shorted the power wire and fried some local wires. I had the wires and unit covered in reflective tape to no avail.

I recently made a shield (not a neat as Kerry would do) that clamps to the header and gives an airspace between the header and shield. This one I routed so far "around the horn" it hopefully is no where near any heat.

Ken,

Thanks for posting this. I paid more for my sender than the whole electronic speedometer. This is 1/3 the price or less of what i paid and looks about the same.

I figured they weren't made of rare earth elements.

Now I know.

I got mine today. Tidy unit. One cravat: If you have a Delphi cruise control you will need a divide by two circuit or a Dakota Digital box. I have the latter so all is good. If you use 16 ppm, the cruise works as long as you don't go over about 45 or so. (Ask me how I know.) Apparently the Delphi won't let you set cruise control at high speeds and 16 ppm doubles everything as the Delphi is expecting 8 ppm. EBL can be set for the higher pulses.

It is getting harder and harder to find 8 ppm.

If anyone needs a divider, here's an easily built circuit for one to divide
by 2 or 4:
