Does anyone know if there are significant differences among the 'gas' based refrigerants such as Duracool, Enviro-Safe, Frosty Cool, Freeze 12 etc? Prices seem to vary from $5 to $20 a can. Duracool seems to be the favorite here but supplies and shipping are a lot more than some of the other brands. Just wondering, Hal

There are probably nitpickers that can tell you the difference. Your dash AC system won't be able to discern it.

They are basically a mix of propane and butane. Proportions from one to another are effectively identical, since that's what makes it work. I believe Duracool adds a citrus scent. Since they are flammable, they all probably add something to help your nose detect a leak.

My experience is that Duracool is the hands down winner of readily available refrigerants for our GMC's

I am pretty certain that Freeze-12 is different stuff. My understanding is it r-134 with some additives to make it compatible with r-12 systems.

I am pretty certain that Duracool and Frosty Cool are both hydrocarbon refrigerants and are similar to each other. I believe you will also see it marketed as hc-12a. I am not sure what enviro safe is.

Bottom line is I would avoid Freeze 12, and carefully read the specs for whatever you do get.
