My 75 Palm Beach has a large rectangular opening under the dash, and I have not been able to ascertain if it's supposed to be a vent or return for the AC or heating system. I don't seem to feel any air movement one way of the other through it (tough to do while driving!).
I've seen pics of coaches that have some additional ducting with airflow vent deflectors, so it must be flowing air in some way, but I can't make heads or tails of this vent.
Anyone know for sure?

George on your year I think that only works on Max or Rec (depending on how it's labeled). My 77 is different, the final version but I'm sure other mid year owners will chime in.

On my 76, the door for that vent is controlled by a vacuum actuator that opens when the ac control is in the recirc position. (it doesn't recirculate anything, the air is still all fresh). The actuator is located in the fresh air intake of the ac system airbox under the right hand front hatch.
When I serviced the dash ac last weekend, I found the plastic connector for that door lever to be broken and not connected to the rod connected to the actuator. Judging by the wear marks where the rod had been swinging on the wall, it had not been connected in some time. I improvised a connector from the help aisle of the local auto parts store (I think it was a lock rod connector - came in an assorted pack.) Voila! The door opened when the recirc was switched and Dura-Cold air blew out of that hole at a respectable volume. There was much rejoicing and merriment until the clutch on the rebuilt compressor gave out...but that is another story.
Others can chime in if a better solution for that connector exists. But I would guess if it hasn't been serviced yet its probably time.

Thanks for the explanation! I did get it working and then installed the lower vent air ducts under the dash to divert the air upwards. There is still an open area of the original vent that is not covered by the air duct. I wonder if it would make sense to block off that section to allow more of the conditioned air to reach the vents in the air ducts?

I did not have one, but was able to get one from Mike Bozart at GEMRECS. I would imaging someone probably has one from a parts coach if you need one.
