On my last outing I had a rear tire blow out. Usually that would not be a all that bad except that the tire then damaged the airbag. When the back end of these hit bottom, well that was not a fun day.

I put 4 x 4 below airbag to hold up side for me to get home.
I usually just block up from below at rear suspension and let air out of bags while it is parked for any time. This time I blocked up the good side same as bad side. block is not attached, just sitting there, wedged in due to weight of rear on it.

Since there are shocks on rear, (is there a practical way to test if shocks are any good?), Blocks take away leveling, otherwise should I expect them to cause any ill effects? I have a spare bag, but wonder if there is a way to protect it so that same can not happen again. Tire that blew was fairly new, inflated properly, and not out of date. Now wife not to excited about going anywhere.
thanks

Brian,
You didn’t say how old the rear shocks are and what brand they are. On our first coach ( 77 Eleganza II ) purchased in 1998 it came with the Caspro Shocks, they are a heavy-duty version of the original GM shocks. They susposily had bigger guts and stronger eyelets on either end where you could break the Bilstein eyelets off under the right conditions. The only way to check your shocks is to remove them and see how they compress and expand. The Caspro shocks had no resistance in either direction when I tested them, they were about 12 years and 40K miles old. I went back in with the KYB shock on all 4 corners and the ride improved noticeably.

Gene has some very good info too: http://gmcmotorhome.info/services.html#SHOCKS

As for protecting the Air Bags from damage it can be a hit and miss situation. I had an SS airbag protector on each end of the air bag. That was on the 77 coach which we no longer have and I doubt if I have any pictures, but I will have to look on some CD storage disk. I have a lighter version in steel on the stretch and I can post pictures on what they look like later. The lighter version are more for stone protection, but the SS I had were made out of 3/16” SS.

I did find one example on the photo site.

Brian,

I'm sorry but your email is a bit confusing.

If I understand you correctly you have put two pieces of 4" x 4" between the vertical arms on the bogie to keep them from moving
inwards and lowering the rear end of your GMC.

Not attaching the blocks to anything is not a good idea, you could hit a large bump as you drove and they could fall out.

To check the shock absorbers see Maintenance Manual X-7525 / Section 3A - Front Suspension (yes that's right) / Page 3A-4 / Problem
- Shock Absorber - Weak / Possible Cause 4. Worn out absorber - Rear.

Ragusa sells air bag gravel guards: http://www.ragusarv.com/

Click on Exterior and you'll find: RV-113 Air-Bag gravel guard $49 a pair

They MIGHT protect your new bag.
