Here's another example of why we have GMC's: John Fredrikson, a fairly new
GMCer from GA is an excellent mechanic who has been here several times:
When he was looking for a GMC he stopped by so we could meet; again to
help install another owner's engine; and again to replace one of his CV
boots.

Last week he called me from Ashville, NC to see if I knew anyone near there
who might be able to help him. He and his family were camping near
Ashville and left their toad there while sightseeing in the GMC. Then the
water pump failed -- started dumping water and squealing. I posted his
plight here and got a call from Nelson Wright, resident of Orlando who was
visiting his summer place a couple of hours from Ashville. He gave me the
name and number of a new GMCer, living in Ashville, who recently acquired a
GMC and had it worked on at Jim Bounds' GMC Coop, which Nelson frequents.

John managed to get the GMC to a WalMart parking lot, where he installed
the spare waterpump he had with him (we'd been suspicious of it during his
last visit). But when he went to install the pulley, he realized that
there were no mounting studs installed. And he couldn't get those out of
the old pump. So, he called the folks in Ashville.

Amazed that they were already known to the GMC community, having not yet
joined the Black List, they were nonetheless willing to help. He picked
John up at WalMart and carried him to the campground to recover his toad.
John was then able to find the necessary studs (using a P/N I found through
Google) and get the coach back on the road. The last I heard, they were on
their way to the next point on their itinerary; I think I'd have heard if
they had any more trouble.

A frustrating experience, yes, but imagine how much worse it could have
been without the benefit of our tight community to help him? If YOU're not

We are now home without any more water pump issues. It was a long day in the Walmart parking lot, but the help from Ken and the Asheville owners (I'm not going to put their names out here without their permission) made a bad situation much better. Ken made himself available with advice throughout the day answering my questions and finding part numbers as my patience was wearing thin.

The Asheville folks were surprised when I called them out of the blue, but once I explained my situation they were glad to help. In the spirit of the GMC community they said that they were glad to help since they could need help some time too. They have only had their coach for about a year and weren't familiar with the Black List. I explained the list and encouraged them to get involved with GMCMI (they sounded interested in going to South Dakota this fall) and to join this group.

As Ken said, this is a driving reason that we bought our GMC and it is clear that it will be the reason we keep it. If it weren't for this community (on line and in person) there would be too much for someone like me to own and use.

Thanks again to Ken and my new Asheville friends we made it home OK and are ready for another trip.

Great help in a tight situation. I've a question though - studs?? My pulley is held on by four bolts which pass through the fan clutch. Were some built with studs in the pump?

Every one I've seen, which is quite a few, had studs in the WP flange, like

Johnny,

Some were and some weren't. But, the studs make installation so very much
easier, so I always install where needed.

Looked - bolts. I didn't find it hard to put the fan back, the water pump shaft extends enough that both the pulley and clutch base fit on it, one need only turn till the holes line up and bolt her up. Studs might give the impression the pulley could be mounted with the belts still on and tensioned. In that direction lies a bent pulley.

I had studs. Wish I had bolts.the nuts were rally hard to get on that nylon fan. Not much room.

76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center... Columbia, SC.

Lemme be more specific. I unbolted the four bolts on the water pump which hold the clutch base and pulley on. Then, you can lift the fan and clutch out and wrench on them at your leisure. Way easier than unbolting the fan with the clutch bolted in. I was replacing the clutch anyhow.
