We are planning to be in striking range of San Antonio. Mary wants to see the River Walk and some other things. We travel in a 23' and all I can find out is that I don't want to try to park it in town.

Is there a campground in easy distance to a VIA route?
or
Should I plan to rent a car?

Matt

Matt,

We went there a few years ago and stayed at Travelers World RV Resort ( http://www.travelersworldrvresort.com/ ). It was a little expensive but is very convenient to the river walk and the missions. There is a city bus stop right in front of the RV park that will take you downtown, right to the Riverwalk. I don't know how you feel about bicycling, but the river is right next to the park and has a bike path along it with easy access to some of the missions. We even saw another GMC there while we were there.

After leaving San Antonio, we proceeded to Fredericksburg and enjoyed the sights in that area including the Nimitz Museum and the LBJ Ranch. Even met Billie, the Sunshine Lady for lunch.

There are lots of very nice RV parks all around SA and we have stayed at
several, but not IN SA. Boerne has a nice one as does Fredericksburg,
Bandera, Kerrville, New Braunfels, Braunig Lake. We always tow, though, so
have a way into and out of the city. It would probably be better to
arrange for a rent car to see the city. I like lots of stuff around there
but inside SA isn't appealing. Once you've experienced the Alamo, seen the
Mercado, been robbed (exorbitant prices) on the River Walk you've done SA
in a day anyhow. A tour of Lackland AFBs static aircraft display at it's
entrance was impressive to me but you can do that in the GMC.

I wish you could experience the best attraction of the area, imo, tubing
the rivers. Trouble is, they're all too high for the time being from our
resent drought breaking rains. Schliterbahn water park might be open if
the Comal is back within it's banks. Yall'd love the Lazy River.

Fredericksburg is a must. See the wild flower seed farm, Nimitz museum,
lots more tourist traps, do the Enchanted Rock, travel on into Llano and
eat at Coopers BBQ.

Then, do Austin. Stop in at the Oasis on Lake Travis.

G'day,

I second Carl's recommendation! Helen and I stayed there too several years back. The park was VERY clean and VERY well maintained.
The bus downtown was most convenient. We were a bit concerned as it is located in a "rough" looking area of town but it's OK.

When we got up the next morning low and behold there was another GMC parked right next to us! It was a married couple from Canada
who were out on their maiden voyage of their newly restored GMC. It was done by a guy up in Canada and looked great! HOWEVER, the
husband told me that the thing was a BEAR to drive and all over the road. I gave him Dave Lenzi's contact details and suggested he
contact him. Months later I spoke to Dave and turns out he did; the guy and his wife drove down to Davison so Dave could work on the
coach. The problem with the coach was that the builder had located EVERYTHING (clothes washer, refrigerator, stove, cooktop,
microwave, etc. down the driver's side of the coach creating a HUGE weight imbalance left to right. IIRC what Dave wound up doing is
setting up the suspension so it distributed it as evenly as possible but he (Dave) still wasn't happy with it. The owner was
overjoyed as it was MUCH improved!

We had stations there - it's actually a nice town and reasonably priced - away from River Walk. Go lookit The Alamo and ride the train in Breckenridge Park. Last year I was down there for a bit, and I wish I could remember the name of the place a friend took us to eat, cos the food was wonderful. He'd warned me 'it's in the gay quarter' which may well have been why the food was good. I'll try to get the name of the place. According to our guys there, once a month they close the gates so the river drains and pick up all the beer bottles. They dye it green for St Pat's, too. For cheap good eating, hit any of the lunch places out in the surrounding area and have the chicken friend steak. Never got a bad one.

Brauning lake RV just outside of 410 on the south side of SA on I-37 is very reasonable n easy access to down town.
