A lot of you know Richard and Jaye Hodges. They're long time GMC owners
and part of the setup crew for GMCMI rallies. They live on the opposite
side of the lake from Debbie and I. They've had their 1974 Eleganza
(Buckskin) for at least 18 years that I know of and have put well over
200,000 miles on it. Richard has bought a couple other GMCs over the years
but always falls back on dependable ol' "Buckskin". They've got a '78
Royale that they tried to drive to the spring GMCMI rally at Patterson, but
blew the engine a hundred miles from home. Limped back home, loaded up
Buckskin, and took up where they left off. He's been just that dependable
through the years. The Royale is not quite ready for prime time and they
really needed to get on the way on their annual sojourn to Minnesota so
they were going to fall back on ol' Buckskin one last time.

Well, we had a pretty extreme lightning storm last Friday night and they
had a really close strike near their home. Richard looked out the back
door to check on Buckskin and all appeared fine through the driving rain.
Sunday he went out to start getting ready for their trip. Upon opening the
door, he discovered that the lightning had taken a toll after all. The
interior of Buckskin is totally burned out. Headliner down, carpet gone,
front interior cap sagging, holes in the closet and bathroom walls, just
heartbreaking! But, the frig was still keeping cokes cold running off
propane and 12V! Think about that!

He said it looks normal from the outside. Glass and exterior is all fine.
I haven't seen it yet but just can't imagine that. It must have used up
most of the oxygen and just smoldered inconspicuously until it burned
itself out. The new tires and Alcoa wheels are fine. The frig is
obviously fine except for probably the door covering. He hasn't tried it
yet but there doesn't seem to be any reason it won't start and run fine.
Insurance adjuster has looked at it. Haven't heard back yet. I'll try to
get some pictures of it tomorrow evening when I'll have time to get over
there.
