This week, I've FINALLY finished some other non-GMC projects and am able to put the head back on the 403. For those who don't remember, back in April, I found a dead cylinder and pulled the head just before the Patterson LA GMCMI rally.

The head and intake manifold went back on easily enough, my son helped me place them smoothly. Today, I was putting everything back together and put on the big bracket that goes across the right valve cover and ties to the AC compressor with a long 3/8 bolt.

This is the way it's supposed to fit together.

The long 3/8 bolt should slip through both brackets but today it just would NOT go. I pulled and pushed and cussed...nothing. It just wasn't lining up. I loosened all the bolts and nuts...nothing. After about 45 minutes I decided to take everything apart. Oh crap! There was a lock washer UNDER the bracket on the stud on the outside of the right side head. It's hard to see due to the position and I pulled the nut off and just didn't notice the lock washer and put the bracket right on top of it. DUH! Embarassed

Five minutes later it was on and tight. Embarassed Shocked

Don't feel too bad, that is the same bolt I had trouble with. I gave up and went to a 5/16. Forgot that was a 2 piece bracket..

If you replace that bolt with a stud of the right length, all you have to do
is jerk the compressor up to where you can pop it on the stud
and then catch your breath before you casually install the nut. Much, much
easier!
