The issue for me was several fold.

The wire from the charger/converter to the battery was sized to carry a max of 50 amps and was protected by a 50 amp breaker with a 62 amp trip point.

The depleted AGM battery was willing to take the full 90 amps the charger/converter could put out which would trip the breaker, so I could not use either shore power or the generator to do the initial high inrush charging. I could and did use the 100 amp engine alternator with the 100 amp combiner by sitting in the coach in my underware with the engine running.

Once the inrush current dropped below 60 amps I could and did switch to the shore power running through the high amp charger/combiner but kept a close watch on the heat build up in the wire from the charger/combiner to the batteries until the charger current dropped below 50 amps. The whole thing cost me a couple of hours of sleep.

Interestingly, the 100 amp Yandina combiner failed on this trip by no longer being willing to combine when charging off of the alternator once in a while. I had a spare along so easily changed it out, but this is the second 100 amp Yandina combiner that has failed on me. I use the physically much larger Blue Sea 100 amp combiner in the Royale which has so far performed flawlessly. The Royale has four 6vdc wet cell batteries and they will not accept nearly as much initial inrush charge current when low as the AGM will. I plan to put a Blue Sea in the Clasco as well when we get home and will carry this 100 amp Yandina as a backup.

I should go back and find Jerry's post but as I now recall his concern started because he had substantially depleted his AGM batteries and when he
recharged them they pulled the full amperage of his high-amp (75-80 amp?) charger, creating a lot of heat.

Thanks for the clarification. From what I have seen, I am probably OK with the 60 amp charger so long as I upgrade the cable from the charger to the electrical panel and keep an eye (or a hand) out for any excess heat during initial charging. 45 amps would probably be adequate and safer but I have an upgrade to four batteries on my project list and feel the 60 amps will be more necessary then.
