Hi,

in a few weeks I'll return to my coach and will start the headline
replacement process.

I have offers for Komacel stuff, 48x96 @6mm for around 80USD per piece
plus 80 for shipping, or 170USD per piece for 48x120 @10mm with 130USD
shipping - What would the list do?

Order this stuff, or go local and see whatever Lowe has to offer?

I would buy FRP at Lowes for about $34 per 4x8 ft sheet -- of course, that's what I did!

I really like the look of vinyl ceilings. Easy to do. I used Melamine masonine with the Melamine side up to repel any water. I used the old ceiling as a pattern and cut the new stuff. Test fit and then apply vinyl of your choice, or have an AUTO upholstery place do it. Make sure they use high temp contact cement. I did not and the first attempt came loose. The signboard stuff that Bdub posted would work fine also under vinyl or by itself.

I used something simular from Lowes, except it was painted camo Smile
$29 a sheet I think, no one else had anything I liked.

I tried FRP and I hated it, way too floppy and hard to handle

Komatex sheets can be purchased from a warehouse in Baltimore. I do not know what their minimum order is, however an $80 per sheet delivery charge sounds very excessive to me. I would rent a pick-up, if you do not own one or hae a friend with one to loan, and do warehouse dock delivery.
Individual sheets in Baton Rouge were $55 a sheet at the warehouse dock. I purchased 5 full sheets, and have 2 4 x 8 ft sheets left over, including some usable scrap.
Stuff is easy to work with, cut with power tools, use guides, I did not use the original panels as a pattern. Because my sheets were wider than OEM, I was able to " move" the joints, spanning to different ribs. Lowe's and Home Depot have vinyl panel edges that worked perfect for covering the joints.
The span from side to side is about 74", if the piece is cut properly, it will snap into place and not need much further attachment to the ceiling. Of course, the cabinets, and the vent and A/C surrounds also provide support.
Measure twice and cut once. Mistakes are expensive. I did each panel individually, including attaching it in place before moving on to the next panel.
I am well pleased with the results, and so is the CFO.
Good luck on your project.

Peer,

You forgot, American's don't speak metric (USAussies do) - nobody understood what you were asking!

The ceiling panels are held in by slots in the top of the upper extrusion that runs from front to back on both sides of the GMC
interior. The ceiling panels are bowed upwards and slipped into them. When I gutted the interior of my parts Avion I noted that the
panels were about 1/4 inch thick (6.35 mm) therefore I suspect ten (10mm) is too thick (I DO NOT know this to be 100% correct) to
fit in the slots; use six mm (6mm).

Tom,

I think you can help Peer by advising:

1) Confirm that he needs to use 6mm Komatex
2) How many panels of Komatex you used
3) How long replacing the ceiling in your Avion took in both total time start to finish and work hours.

10 mm is too stiff for the bends in the ceiling. I used 6mm. When I get brave and rip out the walls, I am considering 10 mm for the walls.

Bdub,

I too would like pictures of your Palm Beach ceiling. I guess I should check your website in the hope you have already posted them. Will do.

I finally arrived in the US to do the work on the headliner. I found

http://www.lowes.com/pd_8566-21553-8566_0__?productId=3462790

Is that what you have used? I am bit hesitant as it says a) not for
ceilings, and b) Actual Thickness (Inches) 0.09

Thanks

This is the product at our local store -- appears to be similar spec just different manufacturer.

http://m.lowes.com/pd/Sequentia-48-in-x-8-ft-Embossed-Fiberglass-Reinforced-Wall-Panel/3162499

I learned of this product here on the forum as several have used it.

Peer,

As noted, the FRP panels have been used by a lot of GMCers over the past
20+ years. I did not use it for the ceiling in the X-Birchaven, but did in
the X-PB my son now has. Even the side walls have it in that coach. It's
easy to work with and VERY durable. Its total imperviousness to moisture
is a definite plus, as is the dirt resistance and ease of cleaning.

For ceiling use, it does have shortcomings: It's flexible enough that it
doesn't really work well over the wider spans; it really needs to be
fastened at every rib. And it doesn't support such things as light
fixtures well -- they need some sort of backup structure.

Naturally, the hard surface reflects more road noise than something more
acoustically absorbent, but those I've talked to who have it don't find the
noise increase objectionable.

Where I did use the FRP is the walls around the kitchen stove, and the
entire area (sides & ceiling) in the rear dry bath. I now wouldn't
consider using anything else for those areas -- they look as good today as
when I installed them in '98.

The thinness is an advantage at times: the raised floor beneath my toilet
is a piece of 3/4" plywood wrapped with FRP. The sharp bend around the
exposed nose fractured the FRP very slightly, but it provides a very
durable, easy to clean, sanitary, surface for that area.

JWID,

Ken H.

Ken,

I seem to be very boneheaded today, so please excuse my follow up questions:

The stuff from Lowes really is 0.09 inches thick only. Is that correct?

And if that is true, it works, but needs to glued or similar to each of
the ribs to make it stay up there?

This gluing will make later removal a pain, won't it, so I better make
sure I have whatever I want in the ceiling before putting up the new
one, and hope that I won't have any kind of pipe bursting up there in
the future!?

Thanks and sorry for being so stupid.

Ken gives an excellent summary.

It is perhaps half as thick as the original waxed cardboard ceiling in my coach. But the pebble surface is very similar to the OEM which was appealing as I wanted to maintain an original look.

I also like the immediate and local availability -- just in case an error in cutting and more material is needed.

I installed white pebbled FRP I purchased at Lowes last year. I am happy with the results. It is a fairly easy job if you have some help, a little harder of your alone. The FRP i purchased was manufactured by Crane Composites. (www.frp.com) What is interesting is that they had brochure there in the store with different colors and textures that you could custom order. I was tempted, but went with the white stuff. Might save someone a ton in shipping if you can special order it into Lowes.

Peer,

No search for knowledge is stupid!

The FRP really is thin -- the just under 1/10" sounds about right. No, I
would NOT glue it to the ribs. In the X-PB, I did leave it with the normal
spans between the OEM joints -- but I drove the coach very little before
giving it to my son. I think he may have put some more screws into the
intermediate ribs. I've seen others use the little plastic "starbust"
washers with screws in those locations. Since I don't mind their
appearance, I'd probably use a few of the regular SS screws with upholstery
washers -- my naturally wood finished window valences in the X-Birchaven
are assembled with those and, IMHO, look pretty darned good -- sort of
yacht-like. :-)
