So I have decided to try to get my dash a/c working. The belt has been off the compressor for quite a long time, but I was able to turn the drive plate by hand.
First order of business is getting a belt the right size. Several trips to parts store and I decided 61 5/8" is the length. Mine is a 78 coach, but some PO had installed a 455 (so I never know what stuff fits).
I have read several of the threads about 7/16" belts and 10 mm wrenches. The local Oreeilly's has two choices. One is a house brand "MasterPro" belt (cost about $5), the other is a Gates brand (cost ~$21). The thing is a 10 mm wrench does fit over the Gates belt, but does not fit over the cheaper MasterPro belt.
I ended up buying both of them. I am not sure which is really the better choice. I would be interested in hearing what the opinions are. For now (as I am just testing trying to get some cold air) I have installed the cheaper, but wider MasterPro belt.
At least I can start troubleshooting the rest of the a/c system now.

Use the wider belt; return the narrow one. Get a spare wider one (after
it's proven to fit properly).

Try this site for 'most any belt you want at a good price. I haven't
bought automotive belts from them, but I have been VERY happy with their
Kevlar belts for my ZTR mower.

Excellent Billy! Now I just need to print that little educational guide out and post a copy in each of the local auto parts stores! Most people don't realize that the belts derive their "grip" from the "V" wedge action. The same is true for serpentine belts, just on a smaller scale and multiplied by the number of grooves.
The pulley on my A/C compressor is so wide and deep that it needed to have the 17/32 size belt, the 15 size belts would slip on that pulley on engagement unless I made them tight enough to make the top of the belt dished (concave). That's too tight for the belt and not good for bearings on the water pump or the compressor. The rest of the engine and accessory pulleys need the 15/32 belt, except for the A/C drive pulley on the crank, which is a little wider. It's still not the width of the compressor pulley. though, so maybe the compressor was replaced many years ago by a previous owner/technician. The alternator also has a wide, sheet metal type of pulley on it, but it seems to agree with the 15 size and transmits power without slipping or being excessively tight.

I think many people get frustrated and go to dual pulleys because the single pulley is worn causing the belt to run on the bottom.

Billy,
My eye immediately fell on one minor error: The code interpretation for
the A/C belt says the 15540 belt is 45" long. :-(
Otherwise, great work -- wish the parts counter people could understand
that code! :-)

Hi Ken,
Just want to clarify the following item:
My eye immediately fell on one minor error: The code interpretation for
the A/C belt says the 15540 belt is 45" long.
What is the minor error?
Billy produced this item and included in the GMCMI Parts Interchange a
couple of years ago and if there is an error, I would like to correct it.
Thank you.

Bob,
While that may be the case in many instances, I know it wasn't in mine.
If you have a 23 with new GG2s up front, an electric refrigerator and you dry camp, that poor alternator gets asked for near 100 amps on a cold start. From significant experience putting large alternators on small boat diesels, 100amps will tear up a single belt. Even running the belt as tight as I dared, it would make noise and not last very long. Yes, I know it is only supposed to be good for 80 amp, but with those two banks to satisfy and the short cables too... "Hang on Mabel". (I did actually measure 98+ for about three minutes of squealing.) That belt is also an SOB (not some other brand) to replace. I can't get a belt part the fan blades and it IS the Inside belt.
What is ironic is that I have the opposite problem trying to recharge from the APU. The PD9245 is in the back and has 18 ft of SAE 10 wire to the house bank. The best I can get ever is about 30 amps charging. So, I have made provision to move the converter to the front and run to the house bank with so gunga momma copper.

Kim,
You obviously didn't read the text! :-)
The whole point of the text is that the last 3 digits represent the length
of the belt in 10ths of an inch. In other words, "540" = 54.0 inches, NOT
45.0 inches. :-) Tut-tut; you'll have me talking about "Girls don't know
technical" again. :-))

Bob de Kruyff wrote on Wed, 24 June 2015 12:36I think many people get frustrated and go to dual pulleys because the single pulley is worn causing the belt to run on the bottom.
I've been running the 100 amp alternator for years and I have 4 12V coach batteries. I dry camp almost exclusively and have never heard boo from the belts nor have I had to replace them other than preventive maintenance. I guess our experiences differ--not sure why though:)

The error is on Page 2.
The "industrial/implement" belt for the power steering should be an A53!

Well, at 100 Amps load, you're generating ~~1500 Watts or a bit less. Roughly two horsepower. If the alternator converts at 80%, two and a half HP to spin it. That ought to be within the capability of a single belt properly fitted. Mine will pin a 60 Amp meter silently and without fuss using the new proper size belt. The old belt was too narrow, squealed under load, and failed on me.
