Two tire questions:
1. Has anybody had bad luck with Goodrich Commercial TA?
2. Has anybody used Dextero DHT2 tires from Walmart?
Story:
This past Tuesday we're on our way from Central Florida to Santee SC. The GMC has 4 Goodyear Wrangler HT (about 1 year old) and 2 Goodrich Commercial TA (just over 3 years old). Driving thru GA the coach starts vibrating a bit. Cross into SC and its really shaking. About 50 miles later its shaking really bad so i pull off into a Flying J and find the left mid Goodrich is bulging at the tread. Put on the spare (a 6 year old Toyo) and the ride is much better. In about another 50 miles the coach starts shaking a bit. I keep driving until we got to Santee State park, stop for the night, and in the morning I see that the right mid Goodrich has a bubble in the tread, not as bad as the left one did but I know i cant drive too far especially since I now dont have a good spare.
The closest anything is in Manning SC, 38 miles away. We make it to a Walmart in Manning, bumping and thumping. I bought 3 of the Dextero DHT2 tires (2 to put on the GMC and 1 to replace the 6 year old spare) because its the only brand they had in this size. At $106 each these are the cheapest tires Ive ever bought. These are also the first Chinese tires Ive ever used. Now the GMC rides smoothly, there is no vibration at all.
Now we're in North Florida at Blue Springs Park just off the Santa Fe river. The trip from SC to here was smooth and uneventful. The Chinese tires are working great so far. I wonder how long they will last, can't be any worse than the American Goodrich tires .......or can they?
Anybody else have any tire drama like this? Interesting how both date code 4711 Goodriches purchased in spring 2012 with about 15000 miles on them started coming apart within 100 miles of each other.

I purchased the Dextero DHT2 from Wal-Mart about 2 years ago. I have had no problems with them. Price was certainly right. I purchased them from Wal-Mart, because they honor their guarantees across the Nation, on both tires and batteries.
Having had one major tire failure and the local Goodyear Dealer refusing to honor Goodyear's blow out guarantee, (He did not sell the tire and He was not going to replace it.) I have never knowingly purchased another Goodyear product.
No real crazy about Chinese production, crazy about Wal-Mart guarantee. Many major tire manufacturing has moved off-shore.

There are many people running BFG Commercial TA tires on GMCs and they seem to be happy with them. I just bought 4 BFG AT type tires. I have zero miles on them but they are made in the ISA and have good reviews. They came in $6.00 more than my current Kumho KL78s, So I decided to try them.

Bob,
In the last two years I have had two BFG Commercial TAs do the exact same thing, one was less than three years old and the other less than four years bold, according to the date codes. Of course I had two PO installed Kumhos do the same thing previous to putting the BFGs on. I'm trying Coopers next.

Carl,
I don't know of anyone who has used Cooper tires on a GMC so I can't comment on them. A family member who has Coopers on his Chevy pickup recently commented that they 'ain't what they used to be', whatever that means. According to him some foreign company bought Cooper and the quality of the tires has declined. Whether that's true or not I don't know.
The only other tire I have ever had fail was a Toyo HT Country something-or-another that was just shy of 5 years old. It had grown a tumor on the sidewall and tread, looked like a football was trying to emerge from the edge of the tire. I replaced the 4 Toyos with 4 Goodyear Wranglers on the advice of my local tire store. The tire guy said the Goodyear was what many fleet vans were using. So far they work fine but they're only a year old so who knows how long they'll last.
The Goodyears were almost twice the price of the Walmart Dexteros so they must be twice as good, right? The Goodriches weren't cheap and they were the shortest lasting tires I've ever had, still plenty of tread left but started coming apart internally.

According to a press release on the website, Cooper was bought by Apollo Tyre in 2013 - the same company that owns Vresdestein. Apollo is based in India.
But a wall St Journal report has the deal falling apart 6 months later.
Cooper makes Avon, Mastercraft, Starfire and Futura brands.
Be interesting to know as the LT225/75r16E Futuras run about $100 apiece.

Just this week, after finally acquiring a used set of the proper 16" steel wheels, sandblasting and painting them, I bought a set of Primewell Valera 235/75R16 load range E, from Tires Plus (also available at Firestone stores) for $85 ea.
I have run Primewells on both my F 150 and my CRV for years with no trouble.
$660.00 out the door. Never had to use the warranty, so I can't attest to that, except to say I never needed it.

According to my Cooper dealer, the Apolo deal did not go through. They are US co at this point and most have good reviews. CS5s are great highway tire for car/ light SUV. Haven't tryed more HD series.

I had always had good luck running BFG Commercial TAs on my 1-ton Dodge, after the factory Goodyears wore out at about 20,000 miles. The GFGs always stayed together but didn't wear any better. I did try a set of Coopers on it one time and thew wore out even faster. I'm not worried about wear on the GMC as we have only averaged less than 4000 moles per year on it.

I wonder if the temperatures and sunlight have had a hand in this?

Could be. The coach is parked outside and I (probably foolishly) don't cover the tires, but only one of the four separations occurred during hot weather, while in Texas.

From a split thread:
That is a lot of tires to lose independent of brand. Are they all failing on the same hub or in different places? Are you running the correct air pressure for the weight on those tires? I would suggest checking your alignment, especially on the front bogies. If they are bent tires in those positions might be getting really hot from being drug sideways. They should also show abnormal wear.
Jerry
The four tires were on different hubs. All were LR-E tires with 65 psi in them with a weight of 2000# (+ or - 150#) as weighed at the Pueblo GMCMI. I check tire temperatures regularly and there was no undue heat on any of these tires. Nor was there any unusual or uneven wear. In fact all looked virtually new with minimal tread wear. I can't explain it. Also, none of the tires actually came apart, just developed a bubble on the tread as Bob described with his tire failures.

Well, now ya know somebody who runs on Coopers. Recommended by the place I buy tyres, second generation family run outfit. I have had no troubles with them, although one has been relegated to spare service and replaced because I flat spotted it about 3/16ths before I floated the brake backing plates. Discoverer II LT load range E. smooth ride and so far no troubles.
