G'day,
I went down the shop yesterday and cut open an OEM engine and transmission oil cooler and have posted them on the Photo Site.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6805-oem-engine-26amp-3b-trans-oil-coolers.html
I didn't have time to label or describe them, I will get to that. At least you've now know what they look like inside and figger out
how we clean them.
I only posted cutaway photos of the engine oil cooler because the transmission fluid cooler is exactly the same inside; the only
differences I could see are the number of "passes" and connection size.
Regards,
Rob M.

Dwayne,
No disrespect intended but to a guy like me that was involved with Project Apollo getting to the Moon cleaning an oil cooler doesn't
seem that big a deal. ;-)
Nor is finding someone who can either, there are companies that clean aircraft oil coolers that I am sure can do the job. Whether or
not it would be cost effective for them to provide that service is another question.
I sent in a message entitled "Contaminated Radiator Engine Oil Coolers" on 7/10/2014. I just reviewed it start to finish to bring
myself up to speed as to where we left off. I got kick out of that thread as it reflects my observation that this place is a "bunch
of guys sittin' around a country stove bs'in." It drifts from the subject to McDonalds, plywood sizes, the metric system, Canadian
coins, how to order a beer, etc. The neat thing is the emails were CIVIL! NO FLAMES!
That's what I love about this place. We're sitting at far flung "corners" of the world discussing problems in a civil manner! We
need to figger out how take over the world and straighten it out! ;-)
At any rate I'm surfing the net to see what I can find out vis-à-vis cleaning coolers constructed similarly to the ones we have in
the OEM radiator. When I have something of substance I will publish it on the GMCnet.

Rob M.

Man when I see this I wouldn't attempt a cleaning job myself on the cooler
following an engine failure. I should have changed out the whole rad the
first time my engine failed and believe that would have saved the second
engine failure after only 400 miles. I then went to an external oil cooler
as well as an external tranny cooler.

I sent an aircraft oil cooler in to a place for cleaning about 15 years ago. I cannot remember where it was now, but at the time it was not very expensive. They put it on a machine and ran it forward and backwards through several filtered cycles to clean it. I have never heard of anyone having an aircraft engine fail after and oil cooler flushing. That particular cooler has been on my airplane for around 1500 hours. We do not buy new oil coolers for aircraft. They are price prohibitive. We rebuild the old ones. It also also common to flush automotive AC coolers (condensers) and evaporators.

I'm sure they can be cleaned but the cost of shipping a radiator to wherever is cost prohibitive unless you happen to live near one. And just buying an aftermarket $230 fan forced unit like the Derale 13950 just seems to make more sense and removes the chance that something didn't get cleaned out. I remember reading on one of the hot cleaner systems that showed a photo of the debris THEIR system removed after it had been cleaned by their competitors.
I took the "life is too short..." approach and installed an aftermarket unit.

I'm a little confused.
The oil flows from the engine to the cooler, and then back to the filter where it is filtered and goes back to the engine. Wouldn't the filter remove any contaminants?

Perhaps one of these on the cooler return line would provide some protection:

John T. wrote on Thu, 18 June 2015 09:38 Joe, I could see that to be true but if your oil filter bypasses then those contaminants could end back into your engine and contaminants in your cooler could also diminish flow and cooling capability.
I have a new aluminum radiator I installed just in time for my bearings to grenade. I'm not concerned about the buildup as the radiator only had about 30 miles on it when the engine went. But after rebuilding the engine, I just hooked the old radiator back up and ran it in without thinking...like I need one more thing to worry about.
I think perhaps I will buy one of these in-line filters just to be sure whatever damage is done does not continue. Maybe I'll get lucky. Either way the extra filter can't hurt if it flows enough volume without restriction.

Rob,
You might want to revise those size figures. The tranny cooler lines are
5/16" with an oversize nut on the radiator end.
When you convert to 3/8", the lines screw right in. You only need the
special fittings on the tranny end. Also, without
actually measuring the engine lines, I'd guess 1/2" or 5/8".

G'day,
Just got off the phone with Hot Flush tech support and found out that there
ARE units in Australia! They are going to send me a list
of the shops here.
I spent about an hour or so earlier today reviewing all the links on the Hot
Flush website http://www.hotflusher.com/ and as far as
I'm concerned if I had an engine or transmission that failed this is the
machine I would use to clean the engine oil or transmission
fluid cooler.
I noticed there are 80 + testimonials on the Hot Flush website so for the
hell of it I called A-1 Transmission in Kerrville, TX and
the owner said if I brought the GMC radiator into his shop he would clean
both the engine and transmission coolers for $95.66. He
said he normally charges $95.66 each but would do both for the same price
since I was bringing in the radiator. He asked what the
inlet and outlet fittings were and I noted the trans cooler is 5/16"
inverted flare and the oil cooler is 3/8" inverted flare "no
problem."
On the flip side I called ABZ Transmissions in New Bern, NC and they said
they couldn't do it.

Gary,
DOUH!
Hotflush sent me the info below and as it turns out that the first company on the list is about 8 miles from my workshop in
Peakhurst. I have an aluminum radiator that I intend to install in The Blue Streak and when I do that I will take the radiator to
that shop and have them clean both the engine oil cooler and transmission fluid cooler. I will get them to save all the contaminants
that come out of each. While this will not demonstrate what will happen when cleaning a cooler downstream of a failed engine or
transmission but it will be interesting to find out how much contamination they get out of radiator coolers after forty years of
use.

Did some more poking around the Hot Flush website and found this:
http://www.hotflusher.com/automotive/Jay-Leno-Hot-Flush.cfm
Comments please?
It appears that part of the trick is in the heat and the unit expanding, helping it let go of gunk. Makes me pretty much think that "flushing" it out in place is not as effective as one might hope. (seen it done more than once) Beginning to think about the frustrating engine failures we read about.
