OK, this is GMC snobbery at its worst. With all the retro popularity Winnebago is putting out a coach that looks like the ones that came out during the time our coaches were out.

I really wonder if this is a good marketing ploy? The poor things weren't very good looking when they were new and so they are going to do it again? Sort of like watching the Super Bowl (which I rarely do) and after an ad thinking, "They paid millions for that?" I imagine a board room where some smoothie sells the idea to the powers that be.

Of course if GM were to put out a retro GMC... now that would look cool... just like ours do. But when you think what GMCs cost in the 70s, I can imagine the price tag would be stunning.

I guess I should just keep my mouth shut and put my new governor in.

Anyone have a copy of that old ad where a GMC coach is smoothly running over railroad ties and then another motor home, obviously a Winnebago, disguised in a bag is shaking to death running over the same obstacle.

When we were at LazyDays last January, we spent a day looking at EVERYTHING from Prevosts to pop-ups. Those new Winnes may look retro but inside they were very cheap looking. I was really underwhelmed. I don't remember the price but it was not cheap.

So did we, Kerry. I'd love a big diesel pusher, but probably not up to it financially or physically. We've also looked at some newer smaller (and fairly cheap) offerings but I can't get past the quality. I probably would be OK with a mid sized Holiday Rambler or Winnebago.

We've decided to "dance with the one what brung us" and try to make the GMC we have work for our needs. Although the trend in the industry seems to be more small offerings, I haven't seen the quality I want.

I'd still buy a nicer 77 or 78 with twin beds. Or a mild stretch. It would need to be nice, though.

I was thinking of that when I wrote the note. We had a chance to hear the grandson of Alex Birch of Birch Door fame speak at a Western States Rally. Alex worked for GM and did some test driving and took his family on a long road trip to test the GMC Motor Home. Interesting stories.

The best story was about that movie. The press was in the stands and they drove the covered motorhome. The cover shook and flopped as it jumped up and down over the ties laid out. They should have played the "Baby Elephant Walk". Then Alex drove the GMC over the path, with the velvet movie voice remarking that the GMC steps over the obstacles, camera focusing on the rear bogies.

After crossing the ties Alex was supposed to come to the door, wave and then drive away. He couldn't get the door open! The early '73s had and issue with the latches. Being a quick thinker he ran back to the rider's window, waved and drove away.

If any of you have not seen the movies on DVD that were remastered by Bill Bryant, they are really fun. http://www.bdub.net/billbryant/

After seeing as many different motorhomes as I did last week (400+ on site and entering about 30), I am very sure I also qualify as a Proud Motor Home Snob.
When one of the monster coach sales guys tried to tell me why I would like one of the things he was selling, I answered him fast with, "It may have more floor space, but it won't fit in my barn."
Most surprising was that there are some layouts that make it so you can't get into the head without extending a slide.

Did you know that some people have newer and larger units and have to either arrange planks or jacks to get them level?

Matt - Still proud of the old girl

Those new retro Winnies are going for about $100,000 to $125,000. Given that the GMCs of the era were about twice the price I'd imagine a new retro GMC would be WAY out of MY price range.

We came to the GMC from the Class-B crowd (specifically Pleasure Ways). I always laugh a bit when I see big diesel pushers - I can't imagine wanting to drive one of those freight trains around... But driving our GMC isn't that different from driving our previous B. IMO, those bread truck Class-A's are horrible from a handling standpoint - a diesel pusher may handle better than the bread trucks, but the smallest diesel pusher is still huge to us...

We considered a (quite pricey) Pleasure Way Class-B and were more than happy with their build quality. What we found we really wanted were "permanent and separate" sleeping and eating areas (as we had in our old 19' van) and that wasn't always easy to find in a B. But our GMC fits the bill, almost perfectly. There is very little we'd change about our GMC.

I also didn't really want a "hobby" vehicle - I already have TOO many hobbies. And especially not a "project" coach. So - we started with a GMC that was close to being ready to go. It needed LOTS of finishing and adjustment, but the major areas were mostly done.

I mostly just want to camp in "style"! An old (or even old looking!) Winnebago wouldn't do that for me. And the new ones ARE crap inside...
