Hi,

Before I install the cockpit pad and carpet, I'd like to run the power wires for the near future TBI ECM. Several places that I thought of I also shoot down, except for in the Passenger seat pedestal.

All of you that have EFI, where is yours' located at?

Thanks for the help.

The driver's seat pedestal. My wife objected to my taking over her storage space. I just had to lengthens a couple if wires over the engine.

Mine is under the seat as well. I have not had heat troubles but my '74 doesn't have doors on the pedestal. I have heard that they can get hot. (I think Emery told me he had to open the door. ) '74 Pedestals have the opening in the back and the dinette makes access tricky so Ruth never used the space.

Originally, some ECMs were even in the kick panels of vehicles. (Astros) They cannot get wet... well they can but I would not advise it. Because it is an add on, it is really nice to have it all accessible. I see many mounted on a board that can slid out. Because of the dinette seat back a board won't clear to slide out so when I moved everything from a '78 I had to un mount devices from the board.

Later, when you are thinking of doing EFI, you will have to put in a pretty big hole for the ECM cabling. During that operation it helps to plan ahead. I had to add more wire several times as possibilities opened. I started with Howell and added wire for spark control. Then Wide Band, Fuel Pressure, Vehicle Speed Sensor. One of those times in life when you ask, "Could I have a do over?" The good news it it all works even if it is not as neat and multi-labeled as Ken Henderson's His is a thing of beauty.

I hate to tell you this, George, but I too badly need a "do over"! My EFI
wiring is nothing like that under the hood. All those terminal strips
around the engine hatch proved to be more trouble than they were worth once
intial testing and troubleshooting was over. So they're all gone now,
replaced by splices and BIG, basically undocumented, wiring bundles with
some individual wires transiting between them -- a real rat's nest. The
under-seat ECU is restricted by too-short wires so that's sort of a
nightmare too. If I thought I'd ever be able to finish it, I'd probably
start a "do over". At least it works, :-(

HI Ken

Maybe you should order a custom harness
http://www.affordable-fuel-injection.com/ixxocart/products/TBI_Wire_Harness-36-23.html

It looks like you can spec it out to fit just about any situation.

Thank you all for validating my thinking to the location for the ECM. The custom harness may be less of a PITA then to self customize a stock harness.

I've already shoehorned the radio amp under the driver pedestal. More question on this topic to come when I get to the TBI project.

Dave,

You're probably right. Fact is though, at my age it's probably going to
wind up as someone else's problem (poor them). :-)

Thats a very neat installation.......I had looked at installation instructions for the Howell TBI and it was OK but lots of connections to be made
he Atomic looks simpler to install (and therfore less likely for me to screw up, easier to troubleshoot and fix).....would you agree, and whats your experience with it?

The Howell efi system with ebl I bought from applied fits nicely under the
passenger pedestal in The Pig. Well labeled wiring and easy to install. I
set it on a pad and if I need to mess with it there is plenty of wire to
pull it out onto the floor.

I need some help my 78 Kingsley sways when over 35 mph and it is serious
when I pull my 2010 Ford escape, do I need to do something to the rear end
of the coach? if so what. Any help would be great I have only had the unit
for a couple months.

Well, if Google decides it has ever heard of me, I'll drop in on the EFI forum. I bought an older system and at some point I'll put it on the coach. The ability to pick brains of previous installers would be nice.

If you want the least amount of hassle installing an ECM check out the EFI made by Professional Products. The ECM is mounted to the throttle body and just a few wires to hook up. I installed one last summer and have been thoroughly happy with it. I removed the old Air Sensors style and replaced it with this product on the recommendation of a skilled mechanic and off road vehicle builder. He has installed several on both cars and trucks and has never had a problem. I liked the simplicity of the installation and as I said I am very satisfied. If interested check here for more info: www.professional-products.com

Bill,

I sugest that you start a new topic for this subject, this tread is on ECM.

Give us as much info as you can, what you have or haven't done to the coach that may or could cause the problem.

I need some help my 78 Kingsley sways when over 35 mph and it is serious
when I pull my 2010 Ford escape, do I need to do something to the rear end
of the coach? if so what. Any help would be great I have only had the unit
for a couple months.

You ought to go open a new topic rather that hide your question here under TBI ECM. You might get more help because many of us only look at that title of the thread and if we are not interested we do not look at the rest of the thread for the text entries. I just happened to accidentally look in this thread and spotted your request.

Johnny,

I don't believe you have to be a member of Google to join. That may have changed. Randy Van Winkle set up the current Google Site and perhaps he can help. Nice group with positive encouragement.

You encourage me. My rat's nest has bothered me. I have even tried to tidy up things and see little improvement. But yes, it works.
