The speedometer quit and the coach only had low gear. Had fun driving it home (90 miles) in low. Luckily it was up and down hilly and so I went down hills at good speed.
Trouble is, we cannot get the governor out. Four of us tried, on a 49s Rally. We pryed, tapped and generally tried everything for about two hours. Manny says I will have to pull the FD if I can't get it out.
Any suggestions?

George, I assume (yeah I know) that you have removed the speedometer drive,
and there isn't much of anything else in there but the governor itself.
Don't know what could be holding it.

George, tell us more about how it acts. Does it move at all? Rotate or lift up??
I've had two different ones out on two different trannys. Both times, it was just push off the bail and twist/pull.
If it won't rotate, it would seem that the shaft might be somehow seized.
I just went out in the shop and pulled the gov out of my old tranny. There is the speedogear, the gov gear on the bottom and a couple places where corrosion might lock it to the tranny case. I assume you've pulled the speedometer gear?
If the gov gear is somehow binding on the matching gear in the housing, you might need to get in the air with the front tires off the ground, put it in neutral and rotate the tires to cause the gear to move...all while pulling up on the governor.

All good ideas. I got it in the air yesterday afternoon. I have to pull the header and then will give a mighty try, with Ruth's help spinning the wheel. I don't think it is seized as it comes up about 1/2". At that point things get pretty solid. We were actually tapping it up while pulling with a light piece of line wrapped around the governor and attached to a small crowbar at the hatch edge. We pulled pretty hard and the tapping sounded pretty solid. Manny is afraid the roll pin has slipped out. I am hoping the gear just has some burrs sticking out.

Governor installed looks like this with the final drive off the trans.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/power-level-valve-fitting/p58018-governor-with-final-removed.html
Half an inch looks like where the pin would hit the case. The governor spins in the case and the pin sticking out could scar the bore on the way out.

Wally,
Wally, great picture. THanks again. I had not really thought about scaring the bore. I think I will have to pull the FD back to see what is in there. This could be interesting as it is not going to come back very far before it hits the tie rod. I can turn the wheels and get a bit more room.
For those here, Manny says put two 3" bolts in place of the regular so the FD will slide back and be easier to slide back.

Ah! Yeah, that seems to be the only logical explanation. If it comes up a half inch, it would be free of everything else. I pulled mine again and my roll pin is actually sticking about about 1/10". Less than the diameter of the gear but much more and it could be a problem.
If that is it, I don't see how you could push it back in without pulling the FD. Perhaps you can work it up.

The fact that Kerry's pin was working its way out is the first time I have heard of someone actually seeing this in progress. I am thinking, looking at Wally's picture, that my pin may have worked itself out and stopped the governor from turning. That would chew up the gear in a hurry.
I was considering removing the cable driven speedometer, but may wait. If the pin stopped the rotation then nothing is wrong with the cable system. It does turn easily by hand.

George, did your speedometer work on the way home? If it did, then the governor gear was not stripped and the shaft was turning.
The governor I was talking about is the one on my original tranny. When I lost my motor, I got a new Manny tranny to replace it just because I didn't want to take a chance on replacing it shortly...turns out I replaced the new one due to my own stupidity. Anyway, when I reuse that tranny, I'll definitely stake that roll pin.
I can take a photo if you need to see it but it's just a pin sticking out a bit.

George, it might just give you enough wiggle room to get the governor out
if the speedo drive is removed.

Speedometer did not work. I did take the speedometer gear out but it did not help.
