Now that I have my onan starting and running OK, it has spring an oil leak. I ran it for about 30 minutes today and ended up with a good sized oil puddle under it. There was no indication of a leak yesterday.

I haven't removed any of the covers yet, but I suspect that it is a front oil seal. How significant of a job is it to replace this oil seal? How much time will it take me?

Thanks,

John

Check the low oil pressure switch before digging into other stuff. They tend to leak when the generator is running. Also oil filter mount gaskets, yes there are 2.

I think it is a pretty easy job... as long as you have the right puller for the flywheel.(easily found)

couple pictures here:

the other trick is getting the old seal out carefully. there are some tricks on that too. I drilled a couple holes and pulled it out using a homemade rod/hook, being really careful to vacuum the metal filings and using some grease.

Been learning/fixing mine in recent weeks...due to a sudden pronounced leak. One experienced owner told me the amount I was losing indicated pressure leak - which would most likely be the oil pressure sender or oil filter mount gaskets (both on side of gen to the rear of coach). The front seal does not have the same pressure apparently. Mine was profuse and the fan was blowing it down the front so I thought the front seal was bad. Turned out to be oil pressure cutoff switch (leaking through the sender, not from where it threaded in), and it got worse the longer it ran (oil thinned with heat?). Changed the switch, all fine.

To check and tighten the two bolts that hold the oil filter mount, the best tip I found on the forum archives was to use what is called a distributor wrench to reach the bolts. I picked one up for $5. You have to remove the side cover to do the two bolts and oil pressure sender. The flywheel and several covers are removed to do the front seal.

I had an Onan oil leak. It was blowing oil out of the air cooling vent at the bottom of the generator. I diagnosed it as a bad front seal and ordered one. A year later I pulled the flywheel and the front seal was fine. My leak was the mounting bolts for the oil filter adapter. (A five minute fix.)

My leak sounds much like what you and Ken are describing. Profuse leak spraying out of the fan. I will have to pull the side cover and see if I can track it down. I'm hoping that is all it is.

Thanks!

John

John, Just check the oil filter adapter mounting bolts and see that they are tight. Then closely check the pressure switch and the oil filter itself. I was convinced that my front seal was bad when it was not.

The front leaks I have had were the oil pressure switch and the governor housing bolts. Pulling the flywheel will lead you to the leak--none of the front leaks are difficult to fix.

First and easiest thing to check: Is your oil filter tight? Please don't ask how I know this. The fan will blow the oil around so much you may think everything is leaking.

I pulled the side shroud and checked the filter and the adapter bolts. They were OK. Started the generator and no leaking at first after the engine warmed up, the oil pressure switch started flowing. I was able to get a replacement from Napa and I am back in business.

Thanks for all of your help!!!!!

John
