Need a model number for a 78 Royal Hot water heater. Believe the control board is
bad but cannot find and any nomenclature on the unit. One of the paper instruction
sheets is so weathered that it is impossible to read. I was given an Atwood #962692
but PPL (RV parts house)could not find that number.

Bruce, I will try to check the model and numbers on mine tomorrow. I have not been able to figure out exactly how mine works. Mine is a pilot light model but I understand there were also electronic ignition models. If I manually light my plot light and set the control to on the heater operates fine. I'm just not sure what the switch under the sink does? Maybe it just keeps it from turning on? The wires are there but not connected to the switch. I will have to study the wiring diagram and try to figure it out.

Is yours a pilot light or electronic ignition?

Willies, is also a pilot light. The switch under the sink starts the heater
up.
How do set the control to on?

Thanks Steve

This document was helpful to me in figuring out the heater in our 77 Royale

http://beamalarm.com/Documents/atwood_water_heater_troubleshooting.html

For what its worth, the switch usually under the sink in a Royale, when switched On tells the unit to ignite or Turn on. If there is no ignition after I think 3 attempts the light next to the switch should light up, indicating failed ignition.

Thanks Wayne,
I have no idea what water heater is in my friends coach. I checked with
another GMCer with a Royal and his looked like the one in the documents.
My friends circuit board has what looks like a transformer on it and is
open on the sides I would guess would be for air flow.

Bruce,
I took a picture of my water heater but can't seem to upload pictures right now. Mine is definitely pilot light and I don't see or recall any circuit board controls. There are only two controls on the outside, first a round blue knob on the gas valve that can be set to off, on, or pilot, second a sliding lever where you can adjust the heat. That lever is on top of the gas control valve.

After reading and watching some Utube videos, it seems that the electric switch inside the coach is not really for true ignition on this model but just provides or cuts the 12 volt power to the water heater. I am going to try to re-wire the switch this weekend. My wires are currently all just connected together, essentially just bypassing the switch. The heater works fine without the switch. Once the pilot is lit it will come on automatically and bring the water up to temperature and then shut off. After I ran the hot water for a little bit it kicked back in until the water was back up to temperature. This also leads me to believe that the switch inside only prevents the heater from coming on.

I could be wrong but that is how mine seems to function. Functions exactly like the water heater in my 1968 truck camper (no electric switch or circuit board, just old school propane pilot light and controls)

Steve,
Thanks for checking, yours sounds totally different than the one in my
friends.
