I normally go up to Minnesota with a friend in his Winniebago for a metal shaping event every spring. This year I didn't go and he ended up driving straight home to South Carolina by himself. About 1600 miles which he did in two days. When he got home, he LITERALLY could not make it down those 5 steps to the ground and had to call some friends to come assist him.
His knees are shot...like mine...he's overweight...like me and most of us. Driving is one of the worst things we can do for long periods. To make a long story short, he had a huge fluid buildup in his knee from sitting in one position too long. To be fair, he probably abused it some during the event too.
I asked him if he stopped and walked around every few hours? ...no. Did you do leg lifts to pump the fluid out? ...no.
The warranty has expired on most of us...be smart guys.

He's lucky. I'd say at a minimum, you should get out and walk around your
vehicle every two hours if you are going to be in the car more than three.
And, frankly, one hour would be better.

Don't forget the pre-takeoff walletectomy. Toss it in the center table or whatever, and retrieve it when you need gas.

G'day,
I had my left knee replaced on April 24th here in Sydney. I spent 5 days in St. Vincent's where the knee was replaced. I got
transported to Wolper Hospital on a gurney where I underwent physio and hydro therapy for 10 days. I walked out of Wolper on both
legs! I had a cane but basically I could walk unaided!
I am scheduled for out-patient physio twice a week and on the off days do home physio twice a day. Since it's only three weeks since
it has been done I am still a bit stiff and sore, however, the pain I was experiencing from the left knee being bone on bone is
gone.
The Mate that recommended the surgeon that did my knee noted that his had been done a year ago and it's good as gold, the only thing
he can't do is kneel down on hard surfaces; he has to put down a rag or something before doing so. I was at Aldi the other day and
they were selling gel knee pads for $10 so I bought four pair, two for him and two for me!
I've got the before and after X-rays and I'll post them to the photo site when I get a chance. It's absolutely amazing what they can
do now-a-days! I have been told I will set off airport metal detectors.

Rob M.

Rob,
Did they give you a card that states that you have had knee replacement? My wife has 2 cards, one for each knee.

One of the big medical news items this past year was how bad sitting is for you. When you see a rest area pull in and walk around for 10 mins. It will only put you behind 30 mins in the course of 3 extra quick stops during a days drive.

Nobody mentioned the possibility of deep vein thrombosis from sitting too
long. Bob drove us from Houston to Steamboat Springs (well over 1000
miles), sat and watched TV while we all skied, then drove us back home,
with few walking stops. He was 67 at the time. Two nights after getting
home he had excruciating pain in his right side--diagnosis: DVT. Thank
goodness for our thorough doctor, he was quickly admitted to intensive
care, stayed there 8 days, and came out healthy. You don't want to go
through that! Our doc says if you're taking 81 gr aspirin or warafin you
don't stand as much risk of DVT, but if you aren't taking anything to thin
your blood, you should stop and walk every couple of hours. You hear about
this happening when flying long distances, but may not know it applies to
any sedentary lifestyle. And the walking helps our stiff joints too.
Glad you are doing so well, Rob.

Good point. That was in my mind for my recommendation, but I should have
said that explicitly.

Half of us old buzzards on here are swallowing warfarin on a regular
basis...
I have another question but am afraid to ask...How can I gain weight???
I've tried everything and still can't crack 150 any more...and it's not
from lack of munching !

Mike, try a milk shake a day. That should help.
