Hello,
My fan blower once again lost max over the winter. I played around with some of the wires, blew a fuse. I found the short and replaced the fuse, when I replaced the fuse I no longer had any fan speeds. I do not have any voltage coming from the blue wire going from resistor pack to the relay. I have checked the wire and I have continuity from the resistor pack to the relay. I have checked voltage going into the resistor pack and have 12 volts at several wires. Is the resistor pack replaceable or repairable? Any other places of failure I might be missing?

Are the wires at the relay connector making contact?
Mine were frayed and I had to re-solder them.
I also replaced the relay and the fan motor.
Maybe a rodent has built a nest in the fan motor....

Sounds like you have more than one problem. But, to the loosing high speed, I believe the high speed is supplied by a separate wire that is linked to the alternator so the fan motor gets full power when running on high. Hopefully some of the experts can tell you how that wiring is done.

Sir, the ground wire is famous for getting loose.

You are correct I have two problems. The relay is bad and the resistor pack is bad. I have already bypassed the delay relay. I pulled the resistor pack, I am not sure what I expected but its pretty clear where the problem is

I already have a spare relay. Does anyone have a part number or source for a relay pack?

The fan relay coil is energized from the fan control switch.
Do you have +12 volts on one side of the coil and -12 volts (ground) on the other side of the coil?
With the key turned on, when you move the fan switch between position 3 and 4 can you feel (or hear) the relay click?
If the relay coil is energizing with the fan switch in its highest speed, then check the relay operating contact for +12 volts. The operating point of the contacts goes to the Fan motor.
The relay Normally Open point is wired to the center position of the isolator. This means the Normally Open point will only have power on it when the engine is running and power is being supplied by the the alternator. Do you have +12 volts on the N/O contact when the engine is running?
If the above are all OK then you should see +12 volts on the operating point of the relay and at the fan motor WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.
If you have +12 at the fan motor connection, check the ground wire going to the fan motor. The fan motor gets its ground from the wire and not from it's mounting.

Thanks Ken,
We are all troubleshooted now. My resistor pack blew. Wouldn't happen to know a part number or a cross reference vehicle for the resister pack on a 78?

It looks to me like the fan relay is energized when either, the fan
switch is in high, or the "Htr & A/C control" switch is in A/C or Def.
Therefore, if you want to hear the relay click, you would need to set
the control to either vent or htr. Then, moving the fan switch between
position 3 and 4 should make the relay click. A question, what useful
purpose does the delay relay have?

I'll have to get out a parts book and see if I can find a number. It should be a common part used in just about everything GM of that vintage. As a side note the resistor pack is NOT used in the highest speed. So you should have the highest speed without the resistor pack connected. I'll go look at the GMC schematic and verify what I just said is true.

Bill,
I was able to also track down the AC Delco part number, 336403. $15 at amazon.
This is going to get off topic now, but I have a parts book but always found the part numbers next to useless. Is there there any trick to cross referencing the part book number with modern numbers. This is the first time I have come across the GMCMHparts.com site, thank you for that.

That relay failing would not surprise me. The relay and the connectors / terminals on the relay burning are common failure points for that type of fan motor circuit.

Perfect, looks like ACDelco 336403 is what you need to search for if you have a late model.
My multimeter tells me that the relay that activates the high speed is defective, even though it still clicks. Luckily I have a new relay in the parts bin already.
Thanks!

The purpose of the delay relay is to allow the mode doors to move into position before the fan goes to high speed. The doors may not be able to overcome the force exerted by the fan on high speed. That relay is generally not available but you do see them on ebay once in a while. They are only on late model coaches.
