Driving my coach today it felt like it was not level. I was driving with the Electrolevel II in travel mode. I pulled off the road and switched to hold and set both sides to down. The left lowered, but the right never did. Switching to raise on both sides, the left wouldn't pump and the right pump would pump. I tried each several times with the same results. Now the right side is higher than it should be and the left side is almost all the way down.

I tried cleaning the contacts at the switches, but no luck.

Any recomendations on troubleshooting?

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a 1977-1978 Supplemental Manual? There is a troubleshooting
guide there that might prove helpful to you. The switches activate relays
that in turn power the compressor motors. I would check for continuity to
the relays to the low side as well as the lowering relay to the high side.
Most of the EL II problems can be traced back to poor continuity in the
connectors at either the ride height sensors in the wheel wells and those
in the wire harness in the compressor compartment. Look for signs of
corrosion and rodents chewing on the wires.

Thanks Jim.

I think I do have the Supplemental Manual. I will read through the troubleshooting guide.

Thanks!

I will study as well. The EL 2 in my 78 Royale all works, EXCEPT when in travel mode the right side deflates and releases all of the air and leaves me sagging. It will pump back up and hold air in the hold mode but not in travel.

I suspect you have a leak in the small nylon line that runs between the hold solenoid and the compressor for the appropriate side.

Are you SURE the switches you cleaned are good by confirming with an Ohm meter??I had one I was sure would be good after opening and cleaning but NO. A tiny piece if the protective foam sheet had turned to a goo ball smaller than a pin head and was keeping the points from contacting.

Nope, I haven't ruled anything out. I didn't get much of a chance to look at it today. I did get the right to lower today, but now neither of the compressors are pumping. I will try to get the multimeter out tomorrow to start at the fuse panel and test through to the switches and relays to try to track down what is happening.

Thanks,

John

Thanks Bob. Much appreciated. That sounds kike a good place to start. I hope to be able to take a look at it this weekend. The following weekend I am planning to be in Gettysburg with the GMC Colonial Travelers.

John, The switches and sensors control the negative side of the air and compressor solenoids. The right side dump valve is not exhausting air. Since the right side does pump up the 'hold' solenoid is performing as designed. Use a test light to see if you have 12v across the leads to the dump solenoid (which is located in the head of the right side compressor) when lowering switch is activated. There should be. If there is, hopefully there is just a bad connection.

As far as the left side is concerned, check to see if the compressor solenoid is sending 12V + to the compressor motor. Hopefully it's just a bad connection there, also.

Thanks for the tips John. I hope to put the test light through it's paces to track this down tomorrow. It does seem like a bad connection or a low voltage problem. I may take you up on your offer if I run into any road blocks.

Thanks again,

John

With Troubleshooting help from John Sharpe I was able to correct the issue. It turned out to be the switches. I took the switches apart and cleaned them with electrical contact cleaner and they are now working. I may still have to do some adjusting to the automatic levelers, but that can wait.

Thanks again for the help!

I spoke too soon. I lifted the rear of the coach this afternoon to test the macerator and couldn't lower the the left side when I was done. When I hit the lower switch on the left side, I hear a click, but I don't hear the his of releasing air and the gauge doesn't move.

I checked the connections in the cabinet and they all seem OK. Could it be an issue with the sensor in the wheel well? I have a spare that came with the coach, would it be worthwhile replacing it?

Thanks,

John

John, take a look at this link. It should help in understanding how the sensors work.http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4607-electronic-height-sensors.html

I don't think the height sensor is in the loop when trying to lower. The pressure exhausts through the head of the compressor in lowering mode so you may have some dirt or a stuck solenoid in the head of the compressor.

It turned out to be a stuck release valve. This coach has the original pump on the right side, but a different pump and vlave in the left side. The left pump was done by Southland when the PO owned it. I pulled the valve from it's mount to test it and as I was pulling it off it released. It is working manually as it should now. It looks like the travel mode will need to be adjusted ( the left rides a lot lower that the right on travel), but at least I can now set the height manually.

Thanks for the help!

John
