I'm in the process of swapping my house AC units with some new Coleman Mach Power Savers. My question is about the top plate, do I remove this plate entirely, or just the stuff in the middle of the 14" square part? The stuff in the middle will come out, leaving the surrounding plate and part towards the back.

Please see the attached pict.

Many thanks

take a look at my blog. I just did some roof A/C work and took some pictures.

both top and bottom plate need to be removed. the top plate does peal off, but you might need a scraper and mineral spirits to clean off the black goo underneath. nasty stuff, so be careful cleaning up the black goo underneath the top plate.

the bottom plate I cut to remove, or I would of had to cut my headliner an inch. (bottom plate is like 15.5" square, vs the 14 in square opening.

here are some pictures:

Thanks for the picts.

Wow, your not kidding, man just as goo as the day it was put on! ha ha. The one time you wish something had hardened over 35 years and would just flake off.

Yeah, I just cut the inside plate as well with some tin snips, came right out no problem.
