Sorry to hear of your engine issue. I have nothing but good to say about S&J based on now having their engines in both our coaches.

Sadly my engine threw a rod on the freeway yesterday and I'm now in need of an engine. Thinking of an S& J and would appreciate input from all the
wise minds around here. Thanks folks

FWIW, I purchased a 403 from S&J last year for my coach. I worked with the sales rep to get a few things the way I wanted and it arrived pretty quickly. So now not quite a year out, I have no complaints about the motor (knocking on wood). Any issues I had were directly related to me doing something stupid or having to fix ancillary things associated with the motor.

As an aside, I tore down the old motor and found it surprising it still ran. It had 75k miles and ran ok but the majority of the main bearings were hammered, gouged or scored to a frightening degree.

What would be the typical TOTAL cost of replacing an engine at one of the GMC specialists .......I'd like to have a handle on worst
case situation or possibility of finding an otherwise nice coach that has dubious engine. Is there much, if any, difference between
the costs of a 403 v a 455?

Count me in also on learning about those costs! I've been reading good things about the S&J engines as well as the Dick Paterson engines from Ontario. I had a Paterson engine ordered, but had not found a competent installer in the Oklahoma City area and when a European owner needed an engine, I offered up that Paterson engine for his use.

I'd also like to learn of a competent installer a bit closer than Orlando, FL to reduce the cost to have my coach hauled that far.

I have purchased several other updates (new torsion bars, braking assist, Digi-Panel, instant-on water heater, Paterson distributor and more) that I'd like to have done. I'd obviously prefer to have all this done at one location.

If possible I would at least specify a RV camshaft, I am pretty sure I have an older S&J engine and it had a blue racer camshaft whit really bad specs for an RV.
Other than that a couple of strange wear marks on the # 6 and 8 rod bearings and an extra valve seal on one of the intake valves

I've had my S&J engine just over a year. Just turned 10,000 miles. Very happy with it. Uses a quart of oil about every 1,200 to 1,500 miles.
The engine itself was about $2,300 including core and shipping. The R&R ended up at about $4,200 including new belts and hoses, new plugs, new water pump and poser steering pump, etc. So about $6,500 total.

We have had good results with few of the S&J engines.
We test run them on our stand for 30 minutes to break it in and emove the
filter and cut it and see what it shows,
The S & J ones have been very clean, which tells me that there is less
chance of bearing problems from the lower section from the engine.
I have had some that had short life and they did nothing to adjust for it.
They told the customer that they did not prime the engine.
We have fond several engines that the metal partials were so great, we sent
it back.
We charge our customers $ 400 for the run in service, and has saved
customer money as if we had to pull the engine ot and install it again it
would have been very expensive.

As you probably know I went for a engine from Patersen. He does the run in before delivry and after 5000 miles it did not loose any oil
It is more expensive but freight and mounting is the same

Goog luck
