While I have the driver side panel out I thought it would be a good time to repair the mount for the side mirror, all 4 bolts are stripped and won't stay tight. This is what I found inside.

Is this what's supposed to be there, there is obvious signs of previous fiberglass work and the L bracket stiffener looks to be an afterthought.

Here are some under dash pictures I took for another project. Several of the photos show the drivers mirror mount plate.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6278-blue-wire.html

note the lower left rivnut on the reinforcing plate needed some JB Weld to keep it from spinning. I also used antisieze when remouting the mirror to prevent the screw from freezing to the rivnut. (The wires in the center of the plate are for the Ramco mirrors.)

Thanks, that shows me what I need, the plate is supposed to be tight to the FRP not spaced out 1/2" with goo in between.

After getting deeper into this repair I now know what happened, the mirror was torn off of the motor home and repaired sorta.

The aluminum frame rail that the L bracket mounts to is bent in from the hit the mirror took and instead of fixing it who ever repaired it just folded up a bunch of fiberglass cloth and stuffed it between the l bracket and the body. It looks like they saturated it with resin and shoved it in from the inside let it cure then ground it smooth and covered it with body filler. after grinding down the inside and seeing what looked like a raw edge of FRP I ground down the outside.

Here is the space between the body and the L bracket it was up to 3/4" thick on the top right looking from the inside.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6780/20150427_114941.jpg

Here is what I found when I ground down the outside, you can see all the air pockets around the perimeter where the patch was installed.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6783/medium/20150502_090451.jpg

I cut the whole section out so I could start over and do it right. (at least my definition of right).
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6783/medium/20150502_100528.jpg

I made a sheet metal form to start the repair from the inside and laid up 4 layers of glass using West systems Epoxy resin. there is a layer of clear packaging tape on the back side of the sheet metal for a mold release.

As I sit waiting for the epoxy to cure, I came up with a question that I can't find a picture to answer, Do the rivnuts go through the frp and aluminum bracket or just through the bracket?

This old thread doesn't answer your question -- but it does have Rob's info on the riv nuts.

I don't recall the rvnuts showing on the outside. There is a slight gap between the metal plate and the interior FRP. Therefore I believe the rvnut is only through the plate

I pulled the tarp back far enough to get to the passenger side mirror and it looks like the rivnuts go through the frp and the aluminum mount so that's the way I will do the driver side.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m57/bdpimm/1973%20GMC%20Motor%20home/20150503_113741.jpg

After I pulled the sheet metal form I filled around the edges of the patch that I didn't get from the inside using narrow strips of cloth and epoxy then sanded those down (I forgot to get pics of this part) and then added a full patch size layer of cloth and epoxy to finish the outside glass work.
Here it is waiting for the epoxy to cure, I have a heap lamp helping to overcome the cold temps.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m57/bdpimm/1973%20GMC%20Motor%20home/20150503_112107.jpg

This was followed by a full coat of Dura Glass which is a glass strand impregnated body filler which was followed by regular body filler and contoured.
Here it is ready for primer.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m57/bdpimm/1973%20GMC%20Motor%20home/20150510_101235.jpg

For primer I tried something I hadn't used before, I usually use a 2 part 2K primer but doing small repairs it's a real pain to mix up a small amount and get enough but not to much as you have to throw away any excess. My paint guy suggested a rattle can product he started carrying and I'm quite impressed, it is a high build sandable primer and it worked almost as good as the 2K's I have previously used. Plenty good enough for spot repairs. The primer is U-pol#5 high build primer http://www.u-pol.co.uk/product-cat/116/aerosols.htm

I didn't get a picture of it in the sandable primer but here it is with a good coat of epoxy primer. the tint in the primer didn't come out real close but it's better than white, grey or black until the paint job happens.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m57/bdpimm/1973%20GMC%20Motor%20home/20150510_154531.jpg

I tried to remove the stripes but they are cracked into tiny bits and even with a heat gun it would have taken forever so I'll deal with that at paint time.

so next is to reinstall the aluminum bracket and drill the holes from the inside to mount the mirror.

My riv nut tool only goes up to 1/4" so I had to build a setter for the 5/16" riv nuts.

Facing off the end of the tubing.

Using a grade 8 bolt with 2 grade 8 washers and a nylon washer for a bearing, loaded and ready to test.

I put some sealer on the riv nuts before installing them, worked great.

If you do not make the mounting secure, you'll not be able to see much once
on the highway as it will vibrate and blure the vision.
The plate is Tig Welded to the back support beam.
The skin itself will not tantalize the mirror from wind waves. .

It's bolted to the framework not welded, maybe that's from the original incident. but there weren't any signs of welding on it or the frame just the bolt holes.
