This may have been reported long since, and scrolled off the page. If not consider.
In the 1976 maintenance supplement manual, Fig 14 page 6Y-16 gives a test procedure for the HEI system if you don't have the GM tester (few do). It refers you to Fig 13 on page 6Y-15 showing an ohmmeter hookup. Hookups 1 and 2 should be reversed for the test procedure C-9 and C-10 to respond correctly.
Hookup figure 1, pickup coil lead to ground, should read infinite (open circuit) for a correctly functioning pickup coil.
Hookup figure 2, across the pickup coil leads, should measure 500 - 1500 Ohms for a correctly functioning coil. Flexing the coil leads should not make the reading change or falter.
To me and most of us, this is obvious. For those who don't mes much with electric stuff, pay heed or you'll think every pickup coil you measure is busted.
