Hello everybody, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm John from Reno, I've been a car and motorbike tinkerer for a while and have finally found a project the missus is at least as excited as I to be a part of - restoring, renovating, and travelling in a GMC coach! When we find our coach and start digging in I'm sure we'll have more questions and hopefully soon will be able to help provide answers as well.
We've been on the hunt for a 23' rear bath model for a couple of months, in "driveable project" condition and would appreciate any leads (ideally somewhere nearish the west coast).
Thanks for having us, we're pretty excited to be here.

Welcome John!
I >may< be turning my 23' rear bath in for a 26' which is coming available locally. If it works out, I'll let you know.. although North Georgia ain't all that close to Reno.

Welcome to the cult John. Not that close but one of the Facebook GMCers posted the Craigslist ad for his 23' Birchaven this week. They got a 26' Royale and are selling the Birchaven.

Find the coach you want and drive it home. If you wait for one to show up nearby you'll miss a lot of jewels.

I bought our coach from a fellow in Cleveland who advertised it as a ’78, runs great, no issues on ebay. Well, buying it sight unseen was a mistake because it’s a ’76 (big deal for me - I wanted the ’78’s improvements) and it had issues.
Fortune did shine on this fool because Tom Hampton’s place is in Marysville, Ohio and I had a fellow drive it down to him. The steering wheel only came off once…
Taking the coach to Tom was probably the smartest thing I could have done. He gave it a look over and and told me what needed to be done. He told me about some of the wonderful things that a PO had done and then I asked him to do the work to make it safe to drive across country. New stainless steel brake lines, serviced the engine, front bearings, brakes, and so on. The one thing I didn’t have him do that I really should have was to replace all the fuel lines. On our first fill-up we dubbed her the Valdez. Also I cheap-o’d out and put the 16.5” FireSTONE tires on instead of new wheels and 16” tires as the “they look new - lot of tread" tires were 12 years old.
It was a successful trip home and we’ve loved this coach ever since. Tinkering is about half the fun.

John from Reno,
Go a little further east and get the 77 Birch rear bath unit I have for
sale. You can read the ad on Craigslist, Winston Salem, NC; dated April
22. Read what I have done. It even looks better than the coach in
Cincinnati.

I'm guessing this is your JR? http://winstonsalem.craigslist.org/rvs/4971299644.html
NICE coach with much of the work already done.
Certainly worth a look John from Reno.
It's funny... sometimes 23'ers are impossible to find, especially rear bath, and currently there are a few around.

John,
Yes, welcome to the "cult" as so many of us call it.
If you're considering the coach in GA, I will offer a suggestion that should
you buy it, I might consider a shorter first drive to the Orlando area. Drop
it off at Jim Bound's place (www.gmccoop.com) and let him check it over for
you. Have him do any important items before you pick it up and launch on a
~2,500 mile drive.
Just a thought if you hadn't considered it.
Good luck on the hunt!

Yup, saw that guy in Ohio. It's pretty much exactly what I want! Already
priced my plane ticket and gas. Unfortunately have one more week of work
travel between me and a free weekend! Gonna contact the seller tonight and
see what the odds are of it being around two more weeks :)
North Georgia won't be much more road trip than Ohio, so can't count that
one out.
Thanks for the warm welcomes, I think I'm gonna like it here!

I'd suggest a MUCH shorter drive to just as competent a GMC specialist:

Ken,
No, I will not be able to attend. Too much to do before we leave on May
4th; Bean Station will be over when we hit the road.

Subject: [GMCnet] Greetings!
Hello everybody, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm John from Reno, I've
been a car and motorbike tinkerer for a while and have finally found a
project the missus is at least as excited as I to be a part of - restoring,
renovating, and travelling in a GMC coach! When we find our coach and start
digging in I'm sure we'll have more questions and hopefully soon will be
able to help provide answers as well.
We've been on the hunt for a 23' rear bath model for a couple of months, in
"driveable project" condition and would appreciate any leads (ideally
somewhere nearish the west coast).
Thanks for having us, we're pretty excited to be here.
~John & Adriana

Welcome, John and Adriana,
Our first coach was a 23' and my wife, Ruth, still mourns "Baby". We drove that rig from CA to see the colors in Vermont. The longer we drive GMC motor homes the more I am impressed with the engineering and workmanship both of the mechanicals and the interior. Clever folks dreamed this up.
You are going to enjoy this adventure very much.

Best Wishes,
