Gary Bovee knows a lot about these generators and sells a very nice, easy to install kit. He stresses the need to get the magnet mounted with the correct polarity to get reliable spark. From what has been said so far that sounds like the magnet might be upside down.

not sure what thread this was a reply to.

but as far as the bovee kit, if you get the magnet in backwards, your VOM will not read consistently. when you have it all together correctly, with the right spacing, and the magnet the correct direction, you will see that in your VOM when you turn the flywheel it will switch between zero and battery voltage right on the mark every time.
