Hi Jon,
after reading about your Atwood install, I browsed through your blog a
bit, and found the pics and words about your carpet install. It is in my
future as well, and I wonder how good it holds up for you?

I had to look that up to be sure. I knew I did it in the MN spring, but could not remember how long ago. 2013... so we ran on that carpet, a full season 2013, all of 2014. and here we are starting out 2015.
It is holding up great. It can be a challenge to keep it clean when tracking in dirt, and mud when it is raining out, or this past winter a few times I used it, tracking in snow and salt was an issue. But a little bit of vaccuuming and some auto carpet cleaner I think has kept it nice.
I also have a 7 and 8 year old daughters, and I do some hunting, and other outdoor away from the pavement activities, so I tend to deal with alot of dirt. I am pretty happy with the carpet and would do it again. Only thing I might change is s small area of hard flooring right at the door for dirty shoes to be left... but that would take too much work to install just that.
One issue with the GMC, is you have to walk across the living space everytime you get in and out of the drivers chair. so you have to be careful not to track in a big mess, especially when you are working on the mechanical stuff and have grease and such that will be tough stains to remove from the carpet.
I know that hard flooring, might be a good option, and easy to sweep out and wipe up water on, but since i use my GMC in the cold, I just did not want to have cold hard floors in the winter,and I also wanted maximum sound deadening both from people walking in the coach, as well as road noise. So there are some compromising between carpet and hard floors. for sure go with a darker carpet to hide the dirt.
so I guess my answer is 2 full summers, it is holding up fine. I do not expect to have any problems for quite a few more years.

Peer.
Rather than install new carpeting which, in my opinion, is inappropriate in a small motorhome like a GMC I intend to hire a floor
covering installer and have him install high quality vinyl (linoleum) flooring.
Next comes carpet remnants that will be cut to fit wherever we want carpet; between the twin beds up to the bathroom, the bathroom,
between the galley and dinette. The edges will be bound so it doesn't unravel. When we want to clean the GMC we remove the carpeting
take it outside and shake them out and sweep the floor.
We will also be able to wash the carpets by sprinkling them with a bit of laundry powder and running our fingers through it (I do
this with carpet squares inside our doors). When they dry we will put them back.
AFAIC that's the best of both worlds; you've got carpeting AND a floor that's easy to clean!

Peer,
I rebuilt our GMC in 1998, including carpet from one end to the other and
up the walls to the bottom of the windows. Using a very high quality
"indoor-outdoor" (made of polypropylene) Berber carpet , I placed it on top
of a 1/2"+ thick hypoallergenic foam pad. We've never been sorry for the
choice. It keeps the noise level down, and the floor (and walls) warm.
The polypropylene was definitely the right choice because it has the color
"built in" -- not dyed on. I have, literally, cleaned bad grease spots
from it with lacquer thinner with no resultant damage nor residual stain.
We have to vacuum it before every trip and after 5-7 days during use. I've
used a small Bissell carpet cleaner a few times and had it steam cleaned
twice during the past 17 years. It's due for another steam cleaning, but
only the most obsessive housewife would consider it "yucky" now.
Admittedly, we are almost religious about removing our shoes at the door
(unless I'm in&out working on something). And we keep a couple of bound
carpet pieces just inside the entry door where we shed our shoes. Since we
always go barefoot at home (a habit developed in Hawaii in the '60's), we'd
do the same thing on hard flooring -- at great discomfort.
We would not be happy with anything except carpet.
