Great apologies for this off topic post, but PBS is rebroadcasting the American Experience show “1964” which talks about a seminal moment in the history of the world. I could reach and say that the geopolitical events begun then lead to the ’70’s gas shortages that lead to the demise of the GMC Motorhome, but that would be an inscrutable reach.

I really enjoyed this episode and would like to share it with my GMC friends.

Did they mention that I graduated from High School that year? Perhaps not...

I remember traveling to a remote town in Central Oregon called Mitchell,
during the '74 gasoline shortage with our 1968 VW Kombi double cab pickup.
Stopped into a Texaco gas station to refuel. Wondered if was an "even" or
"odd" number day as the Willamette Valley gas stations would only sell you
10 gallons at a time, and only if your license plates started with an even
or odd number on whichever day it was. The owner of the small town Texaco
said "Hell, we ain't got no gasoline shortage here, buy all you want. What
we got here is a customer shortage !" Lots of lame gov't excuses for it,
none of us will probably ever get the real truth behind it.

About 10 years before I was driving but did you know that gas is cheaper now, in inflation adjusted dollars, than it was in 1964?

http://inflationdata.com/articles/inflation-adjusted-prices/inflation-adjusted-gasoline-prices/

Its also cheaper than the average over the last 100 years..........

"The owner of the small town Texaco

Theres your answer.....supply and demand. That Gas station likely had monthes supply of gas in his tanks and any locals (virtually the only ones buying his gas) either had already, or couldn't afford
to fill their tanks with gas....so supply was adequate to meet demand. In towns however, even today, if all car owners suddenly decide to fill up and keep their tanks filled the supply cannot cope in the short term even if there is no overall shortage of Gas.
In the 1970s there was a real shortage and that was made far worse by people doing the selfish but rational thing at an individuals level, of making sure "they" had enough. Compound that with suppliers seeing that the value of gas was going up so are reluctant to sell gas now when they can expect to sell it for more later.......and you have a crisis like that in the 70s

Economic recessions work in much the same way.......its rational for an individual or company to retrench and stop spending in a recession, however its that very action by many that drives the recession.

Economies and Markets are very complex things, its a wonder they work so well most of the time.
