for anybody interested, I Installed an alternative muffler on my onan. my testing right now, shows it is a little bit louder then the original Muffler I had on there. But, I think by adding a little more exhaust pipe, I should be able to get it close to the same noise level.

info and pictures are on my blog:

You can use 1 1/4 flex exhaust pipe from O'Reillys (formerly Kragen,
Checkers) for about $5.00 ft to replace the downpipe.

For the bracket on my replacement muffler I used a 12" or so long piece of 1" galvanized strut. Positioned the open side of the strut towards the muffler and held in place with several large stainless wormgear hose clamps.

The muffler bracket from the generator frame was then bolted to the strut

Uhhh... I wouldn't use flexpipe anywhere INSIDE the compartment. It leaks eventually, rusts very fast, and you may end up with exhaust gasses burning your insulation in the compartment or starting a fire.

Just something I wouldn't feel safe with.

I installed a little bit of pipe, and cut a 90 degree elbow off, and it made quite a bit of difference in the sound. I also installed a little bit of a stainless steel pot scrubber for a little extra, but I actually do not think it got any quieter after I added the pot scrubber. As soon as I put that pipe on that muffler, it changed its whole tone.

I updated my Blog with the pictures. It looks like I am pretty equal with my old muffler that was on it, and I can live with that. YOu hear alot of engine noise now as well as the exhaust. so I am not sure how much quieter it could possibly be. I will be comparing others if I cross path with any other working onans just for curiosity. I have less then $70 in this, and maybe 1.5-2 hours time.

I still do not see how anybody can sleep in the coach with that thing running... but it will be nice to be able to fire it up and run the roof A/C while in transit.
