I was unable to shift into s or l... so I purchased a transmission shift
cable replacement last fall/summer from Applied..
trying to figure out what i am doing wrong, when i install it, the column
shifter moves VERY EASY.. but the gears don't actually change at the
tranny.

When i bought it Nick i think was on vacation and Jim tried to walk me
through it.. I thought I would send a request for advice here.. and also
call applied again.

David,

Guessing here but is the top end of the cable case held tight as well? I don't remember how they are attached but the case has to be fixed solid or it can move and not the cable inside.

David,

Have you checked page 7-26 in service manual X-7525? The illustrations
there, plus perhaps the adjacent text pages, should contain all the
information you need. If not, you need to have someone watch the shift
lever on the transmission while the column lever is moved. If the
transmission lever is moving without changing the gear, you'll have to pull
the pan to, probably, replace the sheared pin which should secure the shaft
to the internal mechanism -- see p.7-36.

the rain wont stop...
if i use my "original" cable it shifts fine.. just cant reach the S and
L.
i think the issue is how i bolt up the new cable. but i could not figure
out how to attach it to the bracket any differently.. I have not looked at
in months, once it dries out i will try again. was just hoping someone who
already bought the kit could look at the pics and say no dumby.. do it this
way.....

David, this is how I do it. Crawl under the coach and put the transmission
selector into 1st. Then attach the cable to the transmission selector under
the coach. Go inside the coach and put the gear shift selector in 1st gear.
Have an assistant hold that setting exactly. Go under the drivers side
access door and index the adjustment with the shift linkage that your
assistant is holding in place. Secure the adjustment. Then place the gear
selector in park and attempt to start the engine. It should engage the
starter at this time. Also check the gear pointer on the speedometer face.
If it does not agree, adjust it's cord until it does. You will not always
be able to get this exact. Lots of slop in linkages over 40 years. To fine
tune the shift cable, there is an additional adjustment on the transmission
selector. It takes some fiddling around to get it perfect.

I carried around a new cable as a spare for years. When we had our incident last summer with the driver's side CV bolts coming all the way loose and taking out, among other things, the cable, I put in the spare I had been carrying for all those years. It was near impossible to pull down to s and would not go into 1. Still we made it home. It added excitement when climbing hills from Idaho to California.

Turns out that the boot on the new cable I was carrying for all those years was just stiff enough to prevent the well adjusted cable from fully operating the transmission selection.

A new-new cable and I was all ok.

The moral here is don't assume that a brand new cable works.
