Just before leaving for Patterson, La, I had to replace my carburetor & inline fuel filters.
We decided to pull the fuel tanks and lines check the senders and socks when I got
back. Yesterday Hank (JimB's mechanic) dropped the tanks and they were full of rust (senders too).
...but to top it off there was a slick of silicone floating around on top. Just goes
to show that "God does look out for drunks and fools".

Jim,
IIRC you store your GMC at JimB's shop where it is as humid as Houston where I store mine. When I bought Double Trouble Ken Frey
dropped the tanks and had them cleaned. A couple of trouble free years later I decided to drop them again at JimB's "for the hell of
it." The were immaculate.
I followed Ken's instructions to fill the gas tanks up to the filler neck religiously during those two years and subsequently. Since
2008 every year the gas tanks are filled until I can see the fuel in the filler neck, It takes a LONG time as the pumps keep
clicking off but so far so good. I also add the correct amount of Stabil to the fuel for 50 gallons.
Please explain "a slick of silicone floating around on top" further.
Regards,
Rob M.

Why would you have liquid silicone in your gas tanks?

After I had owned my GMC for about 4 years, Leigh Harrison pointed out
that I had a fuel filter/water separator. I wondered why someone would
install something like that for no reason(ain't cheap). I think now 13 years after
I bought ANNIE, I have finally may have figured out why the PO sold her.
That and maybe now I know why I would smell gasoline when I would top
off the tanks all of the way. Looks like they tried to seal the tanks with silicone.
We are now cleaning the tanks, new senders and socks and all flex lines
are being replaced. ...New filters too. I have been topping the tanks w/ 92 octane non
ethanol gas when ever I come off the road and put her back in storage. ....and she
only stays in storage for about three weeks at a time.
Just goes to show. It is always something.
