It has been a long 15 hour trip home to Lake Mary, Fl from NO. The Beast
left our NO campground with Jeff and Sally Sirum leading the way. We left
about a half hour later to drop off the rental car in Slidell when we
get a call that the beast blew a pwr steering hose and was at the Mississippi
I-10 welcome center at exit 2. Didn't take Jeff too long to find a replacement
hose and we started out with Jeff in the lead, the beast in the middle and
us (ANNIE) in the drag keeping an eye on the beast. Things went well. A few
accidents (some bad) but we kept going about 60-61 mph without incident. We left
them when they hit the exit for Jeff's brother's home and an over night. Can't
drive the beast at night since it lost a head light in the accident.
I drove two five hour shifts and Ada did a five hour turn. So the drive wasn't
too bad. Home now at 1 AM and winding down for bed and a good night's sleep.

I happened to phone Cat Meyers to discover they had a blowout on Pontchartrain Bridge. They had to continue couple of miles to get off bridge. Lost skirt & torn out brake line. I turned around to see if I might be of any assistance. John Richardson & Dan patched brakeline, got new tire & they were back on the road to Biloxi where a few were spending the night. They ordered 4 new tires for this morning so they will have 6 new tires.

I'm waiting for Rob Mueller to ask this question: "How old were those tires?" Glad you got back on the road, saved more than $1000, I should think, a heroic save.

Sorry to have intimated you had the problem by responding as if you did. Thanks for reporting on this, and showing through your report that even on the Ponchartrain causeway, you can drive with one flat for a couple of miles and come out relatively unscathed. It's a little unsettling to get on the causeway at all with any vehicle because you know you are committed for 23.83 miles with no stopping place. I made that comment because it does seem we have enough data to start to form an opinion about how long tires should be kept on our motorhomes before replacement. But, we don't compile it at all. I am still seeing reports of blowouts. Opinions differ on the forum about how old a tire is too old, but blowout experience should help. Opinions I recall say from as little as four years on up to ten years or longer. Of course I am setting us up for a tire war renewal, and I shouldn't do that. Tire replacement should be on a JWID basis. Let your own experience be your guide. It's easy for me to comment on early replacement of tires because of my own detrimental experience with 15 passenger vans and six year tires. However, while the tires are the same, their useage is different due to the cantilever of the back of the van. I note the new Chevrolet 15-passenger vans have less cantilever than the Fords or Dodges.

A blow-out can happen at anytime. I had less than 3,000 miles on a 6 month
old Michelin tire when the inner side wall blew out.
