April came, and we flew.
Germany didn't want us to leave. We had to wait nearly two hours on the
field, due to heavy winds in Schiphol. SWMBO was getting really agitated
:) In the end, the did leave, and flew without further problems to
Dulles Airport.
My friend picked us up, and we drove 4hours to the GMC.
Hooray, finally.
Generator doesn't start. Need to batteries. Went to Walmart and got one.
With a new battery, generator starts right away. Needing to use the
toilet, we find out that a lot of water is leaking :( - first things
first, we are tired and go to sleep. Temps in Farmville were near
freezing at night, but thanks to some sleeping bags no problem there for
me. SWMBO was cold though...
Next morning, first order of business, get the water leak fixed. First
fill up with fresh water. Takes a while to fill the 40 gallons. Back
home, we check were the leak is. Comes from under the bathroom sink.
Luckily, one can remove the doors from under the sink and have fairly
easy access to everything there. Turns out, the T-piece delivering cold
water to water heater, the bathroom faucet and the kitchen faucet is
broken. Yeah for not winterizing, due to the GMC being at the shop from
August till December... :(
Lowe didn't have the right T-piece so we took a couple of different
fittings. Also the line from the T-piece to the water heater was broken.
Replaced as well. And the line under the kitchen sink burst. Cut it, and
added a connector and some new line.
On the Lowe parking lot, an older gentleman approached the coach. He
owned a total of three GMCs, and still has one from '73 (iirc). Stupid
me did not ask him, where he let them serviced around here.
After a full day at Lowe's with SWMBO sleeping in the back nearly the
whole time, water leaks are reduced to a dripple and we can live with
that for now. Will need to order the right T-piece online.
Today, we will drive from Farmville to Virginia Beach.

Wow, you are looking for an adventure or maybe a divorce??
I chased alot of plumbing lines, trying to find the correct thing. I found these hoses that hook up faucets, or water heater, or washer/dryer were great replacements for the lines. and for T-fittings, I think you can find garden hose stuff that will work.
at least that is what i am remembering:
http://www.amazon.com/Watts-PBSP48-88CP-2-Inch-Braided-Stainless/dp/B000VYN0W0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1428065965&sr=8-3&keywords=stainless +water+line
Keep the blacklist handy, and ask for some help before wasting too much of your trip trying to figure out small problems.
good luck!

Well Technically it was the Dutch
In hindsight.....it would have been wiser to have planned a few days at the start in a local hotel.....best case you can cancel and drive off into the sunset, worst case CFO has
warm bed to sleep in etc.

It's a wonder any of us survived to adulthood. I bet I drank thousands of gallons of water from a garden hose as a kid. Definitely rode a bike without a helmet.
Quickest way to get rich in America? Create a mildly different product from something that's out there and hire a PR firm and a research firm to show that a chemical making up almost nothing in the product can cause cancer if injected in massive quantities into lab rats. That or slap "Baby Safe" on something and charge 200x as much as the same thing without the sticker.
My wife and I were talking about this kind of crap the other day when she announced my 5 year old daughter's car seat had expired and needed to be replaced. How does a car seat expire? Apparently some rubber bits break down over 3.5 years making the whole seat unsafe. Yeah, I get that the sun affects rubber and plastic, see our never-ending discussions about tires and dashboards, but the car seat is in a vehicle that is garage kept and the windows on the minivan are UV tinted. What a racket. But it pertains to kids and it's all over the internet, so it creates a panic!

Hello Peer. You are a brave man !
Wish you, and you wife the best on this trip
There are a lot of things that can and will go wrong on a old coach, I know! Hope you can solve them as you go
As for waterhoses I would be more worried about what is crawling around in thos 40 year old hoses then about contemmination from new hoses

Peter, I also had some water leaks, went to Home Depot and was help by a
former plumber. He took one look at the plastic pipe and said it was Pex
piping and to use SharkBite fittings
http://www.homedepot.com/b/Plumbing-Pipes-Fittings-PEX-Pipe-Fittings/N-5yc1vZbuty
Use the SharkBite clamps
http://www.homedepot.com/p/SharkBite-1-2-in-Stainless-Steel-PEX-Clamp-10-Pack-UC953A/202032891
Use this pliers for crimping:

Leak free;-)

You are assuming that the product did not have a design flaw and that the "rubber parts" were correctly spec'd and manufactured..........
Given the constant drive by the bean counters to reduce product cost (amongst other things) thats not a safe assumption.
Yes people do panic over dumb stuff...and do even dumber things like not getting their kids vaccinated, but if it was my five year old...I'd check the parts in
question, if they are good, fine.
When I was a kid, seatbelts were a novelty and I would share a belt with a sibling (no kids seats) and yes I'm still here.....but lots of kids died and cannot comment
on how seat belts and kids seats are a good thing.......including the five kids in the car that crashed outside my Mums house.........of the five kids and four adults in the two cars
only one survived, the only one that was wearing a seatbelt. Not something anyone wants to witness.
Pete
It's not one car seat or one brand. The blanket recommendation is for EVERY car seat because they all use rubber. It's an NHSTA thing. Plastic loses elasticity so the bases can shatter. The belts apparently stretch because of the rubber in them. There are lots of reasons given.

Yeah, same rule for motorcycle helmets. No way to tell if they are
deteriorated, other than destructive testing.

Are you saying cool looking Bell Star helmet is out of date? My wife gave that to me as my first present in 1970. Love that old helmet and it's made in the USA. Hell what are a few more years it still looks ok .

I remember the first serious auto crash I ever saw. 51 chev ran off the
road and impacted a large leaf maple tree dead bang in the center of the
front end. Bell housing of the online 6 was in the space between the front
and rear seats. All three occupants were in the front seat unrestrained
when the crash occurred. Only the driver remained in the car because he
was impaled by the steering column shaft. Other two exited through the
windshield. Car was unrecognizable except by the trunk emblem. Don't ever
want to view anything like that again. Modern cars with restraints, crumple
zones, air bags, ABS brakes prevent a lot of deaths like that one. But,
technology only takes us so far. We cannot engineer our way out of STUPID,
and we will always have the human factor. Just the way it is. My wife
Judy's parents are 97 and 95
Still live independently. Still grow a garden, drive, pay their own bills,
mow and maintain their yard. The era they are from created what all of us
enjoy today. No one has any entitlement to anything other than the right to
succeed or fail on their own effort. (Rant off) be safe out there, think
for yourself, enjoy time in your GMC, life is too short as it is.

Mac,
You need to change the we to an I - when YOU were a kid - Jeremy is a hell of a lot younger than you; you're an old bugger like me!
;-)
Jeremy,
What if there IS a component that DOES break down and your baby goes flying through the windshield, you going to accept
responsibility and say it was MY fault for NOT replacing the seat or are you going to go after the manufacturer?
Regards,
Rob M.

MOST garden hose is NOT certified for use as drinking water! Nasty chemicals in the plastic!
It's a wonder any of us survived to adulthood. I bet I drank thousands of gallons of water from a garden hose as a kid. Definitely
rode a bike without a helmet.
Quickest way to get rich in America? Create a mildly different product from something that's out there and hire a PR firm and a
research firm to show that a chemical making up almost nothing in the product can cause cancer if injected in massive quantities
into lab rats. That or slap "Baby Safe" on something and charge 200x as much as the same thing without the sticker.

> My wife and I were talking about this kind of crap the other day when she announced my 5 year old daughter's car seat had expired
and needed to be replaced. How does a car seat expire? Apparently some rubber bits break down over 3.5 years making the whole seat
unsafe. Yeah, I get that the sun affects rubber and plastic, see our never-ending discussions about tires and dashboards, but the
car seat is in a vehicle that is garage kept and the windows on the minivan are UV tinted. What a racket. But it pertains to kids
and it's all over the internet, so it creates a panic!

Rob, it does seem that a very large percentage of the folks on this list are "in the vicinity" (+/- 7 years or so) age-wise of thee and me!

36 Rob. Still hanging in there. Would I sue? Don't know. If something happened to my kid I wouldn't be very rational. But here's the thing. That seat started breaking down the moment it was made. The expensive ones the cheap ones, those kept inside, outside, heavily used, rarely used. It all matters. But the regulations don't account for any of it, just a blanket time period. That time has to be set to a worst case, just for lawsuit reasons. Therefore common sense kicks in, except it doesn't because it says " kids" we all panic. It is ridiculous.

Jeremy,
You've got a wise head on your 36 year old shoulders!
I just scanned the Wikipedia entry of children's car seats and it's pretty interesting.
I agree the variables and how they affect the seat life are too complex so someone or some regulatory body set the replacement
period at the worst case scenario.

Rob M.
