Good Morning
I was in the process of changing my transmission filter and putting a
new gasket on the pan and I noticed that the wire for the down shift
solenoid was all cracked, partially bare and nearly broken off at the
solenoid. I bought a new one from Napa, part # TKS100 per the parts
interchange book and it's not even a close match to the one I removed.
Can anyone shed any light on what is the right one for replacement.
I've searched the net and the only one I can find is the one that
doesn't match.
Thanks
Ray

Ray,
IIRC you can remove the cap from that solenoid and solder a new lead on it.

I was able to make the new one work. Had to drill one new hole,
enlarge the other and then make a home made gasket. And the wire
needed to be extended. Kind of a mess in my opinion.

I'm not a big fan of leaving it unplugged. I have no problem shifting down into 2cnd or even first when I realize I'm gong to lug the engine on a grade, but once in a while I need a quick downshift just by flooring it. Just last weekend I had to do make quick passing decisions and under those situations it is nice to have the kickdown switch.

armandminnie wrote on Thu, 02 April 2015 17:00As Gene Fisher said, Manny recommends not using the solenoid. Just downshift manually when you need to - keeps more pressure on clutches I think.
That is all a nice plan, and I agree with it when you are looking at terrain.
But, if you are in urban traffic and you need to kick her in the ass, that is no time to be playing with levers.
It does work, and in case you don't know it, a light coach with a good running BIG motor can be a SURPRISE.

IIRC manny does more than just unplug the solenoid. I think he blocks some passages to prevent internal pressure dropping leaks. Check with Manny.
Ray - if you want to repair the old one there is some tefflon coated wire somewhere in the barn. It may be with the wire stuff on the drivers side of the coarch, in a desk drawer or in one of the "automotive electric" blue tubs in the lower garage. All the soldering stuff is in the IBM cabinet in the lower garage.

When you read through the shop manual, it does look like manually downshifting is different than just using the kickdown as far as mechanization. Regardless, I have no problem manually downshifting if I know I'm climbing and descending, but I will never give up my kickdown switch either. Ray, if you can post a pic of your failed solenoid that would be great because if the interchange manual is wrong, we need to see what the wrong part looks like.

Thanks Ray. I can see several reasons why a "GMC Interchange" part may not work, but this feedback is great. At least we know whether to proceed with caution, need to modify the part, correct the manual. or shop carefully and find a part that has a good number and is the right part.

Hi, Finally getting back to work on the GMC after many years converting an old barn into a house. I found the problem with the transmission not shifting into 3rd was a downshift solenoid stuck in the open position. None of the Solenoids that I found with #s gleaned from this list look the same as the one I removed but they do look like they might work. Any one tried any of these?
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/75-eleganza/p57710-400-3l80-detent-kick-down-kd-solenoid-26amp-3b-one-pin-large-connector-ebay-2422.html
The original GMC #1993319 Downshift Solenoid (Kick Down)
other #s
This is suppose to fit: $40~
8626974, 8629935, TKS1
This one checks as compatible for a 75 Tornado:

this one checks as not for a 75 Tornado: $21.21 (however it looks like the same part as above)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400-3L80-Detent-Kick-Down-KD-Solenoid-One-Pin-Large-Connector-Oring-th400-hd/8075007566?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_tr kparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D29256%26meid%3D84837e715f7044a59b97692c3432fa94%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%
26sd%3D807500 7566
I just took the rocker plate off the old one and found the hinge points had been bent, possibly when the transmission was reinstalled when I bought the motorhome or perhaps a ding to the pan. After straightening the part it works! Don't know if it seals well, I'll try it with compressed air
