Some time ago I was thinking about Jim K’s success in the Pineblock Derby and wondered if there might be lessons for our coaches. One of his tweaks was to get the rig riding on as few wheels as possible - 3, I think. Since I just had them install the Quadrabag last November I’ve been trying a few different settings - increasing bag pressure for the front bags, rear bags, only one side, and so on.
Sunday I came back from San Diego and for this run I had the rear-rear bags set to 30lbs higher than the front bags. Also I’ve increased the tire pressure to 70 lbs (I generally run at 65). I’ve been tracking fuel consumption since I got the coach and this morning I was amazed that for the round trip I achieved 12.34 mpg. In fairness I did recently remove the roof pod and changed to iridium spark plugs set to .019 gap (very small).
Prior to this and when I had the older 4-bag setup I rarely achieved mid 9’s. Rolling resistance must play a bigger role than I had imagined. I keep my speed under 65 when going for an efficiency run, so that helps. It wasn’t until this morning when poking my data into the spreadsheet that I realized it’s April Fools Day!
