That is the point of my post, Bob. One cannot just throw something inside a reflector and lens designed for something else and expect it to work properly. Hence, these Sylvania units are designed from the ground up to be what they are, and that is one reason they have an MSRP of $500 per pair. Based on my experience with both HID and LED bulbs going into reflector/lens units designed for H4 bulbs, my guess is these are superior to most of those and likely superior or equal to the best of the halogen units as well.....with the added benefits of lower power consumption and long service life. Let us know what you find over time with these good looking units.

One good analogy is the old coal oil or kerosine fired lights employed in light houses would not throw enough light out to sea to matter until they were mounted behind a Fresnel lens. Then they became a God send for mariners wishing to stay off the rocks.

I agree with what you say but these are not LED bulbs in a regular headlight. These are fully sealed LED units with lenses designed accordingly. Now
are they better than a high end H4 system--maybe not. Generally I have found Sylvania lighting products to be pretty good.

Second that.

Every type bulb produces light differently. Halogens require a different reflector/lens than HIDs to get the most out of the beam. Without proper focus, the light just scatters uselessly.

For those who like the 10,000 word explanation:

Kudos to Sylvania for recognizing a significant market. Not wild about the look, or the initial price. But, if it puts out better light, people will buy them there and will be upgrades and better prices...

It's expensive to be an early adopter! I have a bunch of odd bulbs in some track lighting in a really bad spot in the house. Requires a nasty, heavy extension ladder to change them and they are on pretty much all day, so traditional bulbs had me dragging out that ladder every couple months to keep them all lit. The first time I looked, the LED equivalents were $30 a piece. No thank you! But I got some in 2013 for $5 a piece and I've been almost 18 months now without dragging out the ladder. Well worth 3x the price of the traditional bulbs as they have now lasted twice as long AND I didn't have to drag out the ladder in all of 2014. Of course, I checked the other day and they were down to $4 a bulb, so maybe I was still too early!
