My experience having used both LED and HID is the HID is brighter and better directed but may be shorter lived than LED. I believe the emitter on the HID is located in the housing closer to where the H4 halogen emitter is than the LED which spreads the light emission over a larger area and therefore much of it is optically off center. A housing designed specifically for LED bulbs would likely provide better driving light output than LED bulbs used in the housings designed for halogen bulbs. The cheap (~$100) HID kits are especially prone to early death and I would steer clear of them. The $300 "German" Phillips HID kit lives considerably longer even though some of its components are actually made in India and China.
