I've decided to go against the general house battery suggestions. I replaced all four of my 6V golf batteries with 4 Optima Yellow tops. When I first got my coach it had a giant 12V truck battery that was almost impossible to run down. When it finally died after about 5 years, I went with the popular GMC Net advice and went with 6V golf cart batteries in series. Even with total disconnects, they would lose voltage while sitting while my chassis cranking battery never lost any detectable charge while sitting. After lots of googling I realized I was not alone and the purist viewpoint was very questionable. After a one week trip, I have to say that I see a dramatic improvement with the Optimas during prolonged discharge usage with my 2 electric refrigerators. Time will tell of course but the warranty is 3 full replacement vs 3 months on the golf cart units. BTW I took very good care of the 6V batteries and they still have seviceabale life after 6 years. They were just never very good to begin with.

Yup--not only is it 2 in parallel, but 4 in parallel. I know all of the negatives about that but I'm going back to my experience and general disappointment with 6V batteries.

Just remember, if they are "in" the cabin, they must be sealed batteries...AGM, or gel pack...lead acid will release Hydrogen gas when charging, this could be catastrophic in a confined space ...of you are using lead acid within the living area, be sure they are VLRA. Valve regulated lead acid...but even VRLA can release Hydrogen if overcharged or get too hot.

I know i had an optima that was dead in our splicing truck, that was only a year old. so I plugged in the converter/charger, and left it overnight. When I came back the next day it was whistling! never seen anything like that and scary. Bulged out, and it was whistling like a steam train horn through the vent. I carefully unplugged it, and dragged the trailer outside, and let it sit another day before removing and discarding the battery.

now that battery most probably had been dead for a while and probably was subject to sub zero temps. but after reading some posts on the internet, when the optima is that dead, it should only be brought back up with a trickle charger.

but I can agree with capacity of the golf carts... not sure if it is much improvement over a couple of regular deep cell batteries.

These things certainly have their own issues and not all is great when you read the blogs. You may remember when Exide rolled out their spiral clones and almost killed the concept. I doubt wonder man Bob Lutz includes that F U in his resume !

Hey Bob,
What size Optima Yellow top did you find fit best in the battery
compartment? Where did you find the best price?

I bought mine at Sam's club and they were $187 which I thought was high. However, I had a trip coming up. They only had 2 different yellow tops styles and I got the ones with both the top posts and the GM side posts just to make installation easier. The actual batteries had the same ratings and size. I can't recall the actual dimensions but thee are a standard 24 size.

Hi Bruce,
I am not sure how long I will be down here in Lamy. A few months or
through the summer, possibly a permanent move. My brother fell down the
stairs in his home, hit his head, and died. I am here sorting things out.
I will be coming back to Boulder often, though, the GMC is still there, so
you may see me looking for some help with the level control. I hope to
have more time in he motorhome now. Best regards, Michael

Hi Bruce,
I am not sure how long I will be down here in Lamy. A few months or through
the summer, possibly a permanent move. My brother fell down the stairs in
his home, hit his head, and died. I am here sorting things out.
I will be coming back to Boulder often, though, the GMC is still there, so
you may see me looking for some help with the level control. I hope to have
more time in he motorhome now. Best regards, Michael

Gene,

The good thing about retirement is NOBODY makes any decisions for you!

Err well maybe not; I forgot about SWMBO! ;-)

You can go on the sam's club website and get the actual dimensions form there but they are similar if not identical to the 6V golf cart batteries we use except for height--they are shorter than the 6V batts and about the same as most cranking batteries. If you can get 2 golf cart batteries in your rear compartment, these will be a snap.
